  • starter problem

Hi guys, I have a max IV with a Kohler 20 HP Magnum engine. My problem is with the starter. The bendix unit will not spin out and engage the flywheel. I've had the starter to a reputable shop and they said that it is fine. The battery is a Crown Trac 390 and it shows 13.4 volts. The starter will spin fast but not engage. I drove my Jeep over to it and put on jumper cables and the starter works as it should. Do I have the wrong battery or is there a starter problem. The bendix unit is clean and free. The bearings in the starter are fine. I need some ideas please. Thanks.

try cleaning the terminals on the solenoid and the ones at the battery.

Hi Plott Hound, I tried all that with the same result. I'm going to buy a new battery since the 12 volt car battery makes it work right. Thanks Buddy

Does the bendix on the starter have two terminals? It sounds like the bendix is not gatting a good ground. Also, that battery can show enough voltage, but what does it show on a (amp) load test? Have the battery load tested at your local shop.
It's all just nuts and bolts.
