  • 18hp Vanguard boggs out.

I friend has just bought a mid 90's MaxII with a 18hp Vanny. He has cleaned the carb and the rest of the fuel system, but it seems to be really "weak" and bogs the engine out while climbing hills (little hills = some bogging, big hills = almost dies) and some hard turning. When my MaxII had a OH160 in it, it would out perform this Vanny. I feel that the Briggs should have more power that it currently does. Any input on what would cause this?

check to see that it has spark on both cylinders. i had a 18 vanguard that would run ok till you put it under load and it turned out to only be running on 1 cylinder. in my case, one of the diodes in the kill wire that connects to the coils had burned out

Check to make sure the float is adjusted correctly. I have a go devil with a 16 hp vanguard that wasn't allowing enough fuel into the bowl due to my brothers adjustment. I tried everything you could think of before he told me what he had done. As soon as i adjusted it correctly it became unstoppable. I thought it was boggging but it had been running out of fuel.
