  • Vanguard throttle setup

So i just got my new 18 hp briggs vanguard and i'm looking at how the throttle is setup and im a little confused here. It has a fast/slow lever on the side of the motor which connects with a cable to the setup in the back which i don't understand. what do i have to do to make this work with a twist throttle? im a little stumped here.
Attached are some pictures of what i have going on here.

The "fast/slow lever" is used for controlling the throttle if the engine is mounted on a piece of equipment. Take that throttle cable off. Then take the one on your ATV and attach it where this one is currently attached to the bell crank. Depending on which six wheeler you have and what the end of your existing throttle cable looks like, you may have to find a different way to connect it to the bellcrank but you will be able to tell once you put the end of your throttle cable up there.

I dont think it's that simple. the bell crank isn't directly connected to the throttle on the carburetor. It pushes out the arm beneath the crank with the tab on the bottom of it. I beleive this is something to do with the governer? The governer arm (if thats what it's called) is then connected to the crank on the carb. Sorry if this doesnt make sense i know nothing about this thing and im trying to figure it out.

Yes, everything is interconnected with the governor. It should work fine. That is how the current throttle setup already on the motor is working. If you look through the engine section of the photo gallery you will see several examples of vanguard motors with the throttle cable attached to the bell crank.

In fact, if you look in the how-to section, there is even a video uploaded by micmac that shows the bell crank in action: Custom exhaust for your Briggs Vanguard

There are a few pictures in the How to replace your Max II Engine article, especially on page two, that shows the same setup and then, here are two more pictures from the gallery:

Richard from richards relics tells me i need a throttle swivel which mounts to the bell crank as i understand it? Is this so?
Also i noticed i have an interference issue with the oil filter and the brake rotors on the transmission. It looks like the holes match up to the mounting holes in the new motor, but the filter makes it miss by maybe a half inch. what can i do about this? Ive been told the filter can be moved? is this true or is there another way around this problem like moving the mounting holes back enough so it clears and getting a longer belt possibly?

You do need a swivel. If you look at the pictures / links I posted above that is what everyone of them is using. For your oil filter, what size is on it? You can probably buy a shorter filter for it, or you can mount it remotely somewhere else. The shorter filter is, of course, the easier route.

Ok so as i understand the swivel is the little piece connecting the throttle cable to the bell crank?
Also can you please tell me what this piece is that came with my motor? there's nothing about it in the parts diagram in the manual

And here's what i have with the oil filter problem. When the filter just touches the rotor the holes miss by about an 1/8"
Hopefully i can find a shorter filter, or i just had an idea, maybe space the motor up an inch or two to gain the space i need?

the part in the bag is another lever you can use for a fixed throttle setup. just going by the pic, i think you are already running the short filter. you could space the engine up a little to get your filter clearance, but it may cause you issues elsewhere. Briggs does offer a remote filter setup and that might be your best bet. here is a thread with some discussion of making your own. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/engin...-vanguard.html

here is a link to the swivel you need. i spent about an hour looking for it 2 months ago when i needed one... probably should have written the source down cause it just took me 45 min to find it again http://storefront.russellkarting.com...x=0&orderQty=1

Just to add another link to racerone3's post, here is a thread I started when I was looking for a remote filter setup myself: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/engin...il-filter.html It lists the stock briggs part number for the remote mounting kit along with a link. The price is what pushed me in another direction so I ended up not buying it.

Thanks you guys have been a tremendous help. I think i'm gunna go for the remote oil filter setup, and while i'm at it might as well add the oil cooler into the loop as well. again thnks, i'd be lost without this site.
