  • Replacement Solenoid's -- where to get a quick replacement

I have done a quick check of my Max IV and believe that I have a bad Solenoid.

Basically the key switch stopped working last week so I just ordered one from Richards thinking that is was the switch (key real loose and all). But that didn't fix the problem. So I did a quick test tonight and believe the problem is with the Solenoid. But I don't have time to wait for an order to be delivered, so I was wondering if a local auto shop might have a replacement that would be completely acceptable. From my parts listing from RI, my Max IV uses a Part Number 20026A. One of the problems I have is that the engine shown in my parts sheet is the old single cylinder and I use a double 16 HP BS. So I'm not sure that right anyway.

But what does everyone else suggest for a replacement solenoid? Can I just take the old one out and see if they have a replacment suggestion at the Auto Parts Store? Which Auto Parts normally has the better selection (and computer cross-check database).

By the way, the problem is that the motor will not turn over from the key switch, but if a use the old Screw Driver trick on the Solenoid it turns over (and starts) with no problem. I checked the voltage at the key wire and it's "barely" reading with the key "on" and pegs my 12 volt meter when I turn it to "start". So I believe the problem is at the Solenoid. Any additional suggestions of things I could look at are always appreciated.

By the Way - if you haven't been to one of the 6x6 World get-togethers at Busco Beach NO, you are missing one of the finest times of your life. I went in Oct and I'm still telling stories to friends of mine about the time I had. If you ain't been, you gotta go!

the stock solenoid is a CHEAP lawn and garden unit... plastic plunger... junk. if you want to replace it with something good, go to your local auto parts store, and get one for an old ford. tell them you need a solenoid for a 79 F-150. you will probably need to replace the ring terminals on some/ all of your wires as a real solenoid uses bigger sizes. if you want to go the cheap route, run to Lowes and get one for a lawn tractor... just look at the exciter wire terminal, there are 2 different types. Lowes, $12 auto parts store, $15ish

I use the old style ford solenoid, or some similar fender mount auto model. The small engine solenoid that came on my argo failed, and I took it apart. They are very whimpy inside, cheesy contacts and plastic stem that had melted.

Auto salvage yards......they have hundreds of them. Ford used them on cars also, and they make great relays for other purposes too.
