  • Two Stroke Carb Problems...

I got the new crank seals in my Kohler 440. It runs a lot better, but I still can't get the carb to work right. The carb is a Walbro WF "Floater". I was told that these are junk and I'm starting to agree. I can get it to idle real nice. It'll rev like there's no tomorrow, but if I keep it at a speed that's just off idle, it will begin to starve for fuel and die. Crank the throttle wide open and it will take right off. I basically have no mid-throttle. Also, if it idles for any length of time, when the throttle is opened up, it will be loaded with fuel and sometimes want to flood out. The enrichener also doesn't seem to work right when trying to start it. Usually it will start and run a few seconds and die. It will do this over and over, but eventually it will stay running and I can close the enrichener and it will settle down to a nice idle. I have had this carb completely apart and blown it out with compressed air a couple of times. It also has all new parts in it and I have a book on it so I know it's put together right.
I'm about ready to toss this thing. Any suggestions on a replacement carb? I've seen a couple diaphragm Walbro carbs on eBay. Are they any better?
    Thanks!
    Mike

Get rid of the Walbro and find a Mikuni 34mm or 36mm. Problem will be solved right away. Just dont forget to install a Mikuni pulse fuel pump too.

What do you do for an air cleaner and a throttle cable? The snowmobile cables are way too short. Where do you get a cable long enough?
      Thanks.

There is a place called Recreational Leisure Corp. up in Michigain I believe and they sell throttle cables and K and N filters that would fit a Mikuni.

Are these Mikuni pumpers any good? Does it require a return line to the fuel tank? My throttle cable and air cleaner would bolt right up, I think. I'm not looking for super performance. I just want it to start easy and run good.

Either that or you could find a used Tillotson HD.My expereince is they are reliable, inexpensive, easy to rebuild, will run function at any angle and don't require any external fuel pump.

Will the fuel flo from the front on a Max II to the carb in the Back,,without a pump ?

I remember back with the New 73' Arctic Cat 340 (Kawasaki) had the walbro carb,,what a Joke,,thing always flooded,,I mean pull the Plugs,,and pull it over,,and gas would shoot out the plug holes,,,,,,Thats flooded,,,I purchased a Mikuni 38 mm,,,what a difference,,did have to get the fuel pump,,but it ran good after that.

Remember way back when,,My buddies had Ski-Doo's, one or both had the tillitson carbs,,almost every year had to rebuild one,,was easy, to do,,but they would'nt run without the re-build,,dried out and cracked gaskets I believe.

I have to agree with m350. We had so many problems with the Tillitson diaphrams that we ended up rebuilding the carburetor every weekend on the race machine. Yes, it was easy and the kit was cheap, but a real pain.

I'd go with a Mikuni VM 32 to 36mm. You'll get rid of a big headache.

I wouldn't trust the fuel to gravity feed. The pumps are relatively cheap and easy to install.
