  • Running a 18hp vanguard on propane

I've seen Vanguards made by Briggs specifically designed to run on propane. I don't believe there are major modifications done to do this. I think they make the Vanguards with the propane option so they can be run indoors like on big floor buffers or other commercial/industrial equipment.

Propane is great for off-road since floats are no longer an issue, the only limit on engine operating angle is the oil system. I don't know how they compare Power-wise, but I know it's a popular upgrade on the 404 Unimogs, since the stock carb can start stalling at extreme angles, so I'm sure it doesn't hurt power. Generator Conversion Kits to Propane and Natural Gas. These guys seem to have info and kits. Not sure if there the best/cheapest, but a start.

For not having to deal with the gummed up carbs, stale gas and getting easier cold starting, I'd say it's worth it.

I don't care about propane, but I read about guys converting gas carbs to propane at heymow.com - Lawn Mower Racing Forum - Index

Also, there's an 18 hp propane vanguard on the 'net for under a $1000 new, a guy could take the propane carb off and sell the engine.
