it appears to be an onan 16 or 18 hp motor.....linmar i understand bought these out and are still producing them...the onan engine was popular in the Jon deere lawn tractors, some of the case lawn tractors back in the 80's. I have noticed some propane models on floor buffers...you might try this avenue to approach an id.
I believe that's a Briggs I/C (industrial commercial) either 14, 16, or 18 HP. I had this engine in my Hustler 980 BIGFOOT at one time....great engine with lots of low end torque. It doesn't rev real fast, but it'll pull all day without breaking a sweat.
The guys at Heymow have some flathead lovers.. they adapt 2bbl intakes and carbs off the vanny's, or a pair of tilly's, lots of internal mods.. they are big CID compared to the modern twins at the same hp rating.
I can see how some people might get this confused for a Kohler because it does look very similar, but it's a Briggs I/C flat twin......you can tell by the distinct engine tin and air cleaner housing (and air cleaner nut).

I agree Racer, the air cleaner is the same as the 18 hp Briggs flatheads in both my hustlers. Also the intake and rectifier seen in the second photo are a dead giveaway. I have at times thought of upgrading to larger engines but see no reason to, since they both run fine and deliver all the torque that I need. Enough to break axles when pushing trees and stumps with the plow I had on my 950.

Have any of you ever removed the cowling from around the stock exhaust to install an exhaust upgrade? I am planning to change the exhaust on one of mine and see no reason that the tin that wraps the stock muffler could not be removed or cut similar to how they did in these pics. Any thoughts? Experience?
