  • 18 HP vangard flooding

    Hi all,

I recently bought a 1998 MAX2 with a 18 hp vangard engine. I am having trouble with the engine flooding. Sometime when I start it and trying to give it throttle the engine will bog out and then I wont be able to start it again. Any thoughts on what may be causing it ?

    Thanks for any help

make sure it has the correct fuel pump. it it has to strong of a pump, it can overpower the float in the carb. the needle and seat in the carb might also need to be replaced. the needle has a rubber tip, and those can dry out/ crack and allow too much fuel to pass.
also check to make sure the engine has spark on both cylinders. a vanguard will start and Idle pretty well on one cylinder, but bog down and not run well once you give it gas

How hard are the carbs to rebuild I have worked with older style carbs but these ones look different. Also is there anyway to rebuild the fuel pump or do you just replace it? Also heard that valves out of adjustment could give me problems.....any thoughts on that?

carbs are easy to rebuild... very straightforward. fuel pump is not rebuildable, replacements are around $20.

valve adjustment could be an issue, and would be worth looking at with the age of your machine.

I found that the needle looked worn and that the inside of the carb was all gumed up. I am going to replace the fuel lins as well. Anybody recommend a certin type fuel line ?

mine had the same problem. it did not run for years, had to empty the gas, remove the fitting at gas tank, found it was plugged, remove gas tank found a big clunk of scum from the old gas at the pick up sump.i fill it up with new gas replace the fuel line and filter since they were also plug also. runs great now. the gas we are getting only has a shelf life of 2 weeks .
