  • Old Rotax Problems

Hi, I hope there's someone on here that knows alot more than me about these things! I have a 1972-ish Rotax 399 that I put in a 1970 or so Max. I had the engine firing after I replaced everything but the internal coils on the ignition ststem, starter, carburetor...you get the picture. I finished wiring everything and was trying to start it when I noticed the 2 wires going from the mag to the right side coil smoking. I disconnected the battery but the wires had melted off. I tore into the engine for about the 16th time and found the wire going from the points to the condenser was a bit melted and bare in the middle. I fixed it but still no spark. There is no power coming from that side at all. the left cylinder has all kinds of spark. If that little wire shorted out could it have ruined the condenser? I am out of Ideas. All I can think of is the condenser. Please help!

    Thanks.

Being the idiot that I am, I had the ignition switch wired wrong. when in the off position it was completing a circuit from the battery to the right side coil. D'OH! Now the thing just won't run. I have good spark and 110 psi on both cylinders, I've rebuilt the carburetor and it's getting gas but the most I've gotten was about a 10second run with gas squirted directly into the plug holes. I don't think timing because it did run for ~10seconds on two occasions. I think I am done messing with it and am looking for a different engine. Sometimes you can just tell when something is cursed and will constantly give you problems down the road.

Those 399 are crappy performers and a rockwell 340 5 port would walk all over
ot like a narc at a biker ralley
sometimes i got a cursed piece and took my time and after dealing with it for the few miles of walking on barbed wired
sometimes it was worth it personally cehck the timing and did you pull the flywheel lately how is the key? Im thinking she is uta time now check timing on her and swap it to a mikuni carb
          happy snowmobile engine hunting
