Does anyone have info or pictures of how to hook up the throttle cable on a Briggs Vanguard 18 hp. I have a thumb control on one of the sticks and the lever only moves the cable about 3/4".

Hi Steve, if you will search the site, you should find a few threads on the same topic. Also, the gallery and the how-to section will have a few pictures that you can refer to. Here are a few to get you started:
Is your problem the same as the above poster where you can not get the throttle cable to give you enough throw on the bell crank or does you have an internal problem?
Mike, it is not getting enough movement at the bell crank. The throttle lever that I am using does not give it enough movement. I am using a brake lever for a bicycle.... What should I do?
I've tried to use bicycle break levers and motorcycle clutch levers on a couple different machines, and they never seemed to have enough throw to pull throttle plates or throttle slides (on Mikuni carburetors) for my applications. Recreatives makes a pretty decent throttle lever/cable combination that always seems to have enough pull for a 36mm Mikuni, and Vanguard/Kohlers. If you can't find anything else that will work, you might want to give them a call at 1-800-255-2511.
There were 2 types of brakes used on mountain bikes before they went to hydraulic. "V" brakes and Cantilever... one requires more pull than the other, but I can't remember which. If you go into a bike shop (you will have to go to a real bike shop, not Walmart...) and ask for a used lever that is convertible to work with either style, you should be able to set it up to get plenty of pull for a Vanguard. I'm running MTN bike levers in all of my machines (3 Vanguards and 2 flat twin Briggs). Also note that there is a lot of slop in the bell crank on a vanguard. with the engine running, loosen the bolt that holds the cable housing down and pull all the slop out till the RPS just start to pick up. you should also have an adjustment on the lever where the cable housing goes in that will allow you to take out a little slop.
Attached pics: Cantilever pulls from the side, V brake pulls from the top. On the 2 pics of the levers, if you look at where the cable attaches, you'll see that there 2 positions that you can put it (one is in each position) the first pic will give you less pull, the last pic will give you more
