2002 argo bigfoot 18hp briggs

Hi all I have a prob with my engine if I am out running around it works great but if I just let it idle it starts chugging and black smoke starts coming out. enough that it leaves a soot spot right beside the exhaust....I actually let it idle the other day for 10 minutes then shut it off once I started it backup it was backfiring like crazy all most seems like its flooding itself...I am running champion plugs....I am thinking of changing the plugs out but should I switch from champion to another type? thanks

The float needle on the carb might be the problem. If it is leaking fuel past the needle, it would cause the symptoms that you describe. I would try a carb rebuilt kit that comes with a float, needle, and seat. I think it will solve your problem.
