hello! i have a 197? argo that floods out all of the time. I had the carb rebuilt on it and it didnt seem to help. i also set the points and replaced the glass ball valve in the carb with a needle valve. the carb is a tilltsion HR42a and its on a 399cc Kohler engine. Any suggestions? Thanks!
By flooding out i mean it starts if you give it full throttle and then it starts shooting gas out of the tailpipe and dies. It happens no matter how warm or cool the engine is. After it dies we pull the plugs out and there really wet and we also pull the drain pulg on the bottom of the crankcase which we get alot of gas out of. weve also tried playing with the adjustments but it is still getting waaaay to much fueol through it. Any help would be great thanks!

Are you sure it's flooding, as in too much fuel? A lean spot can cause similar "bog" conditions. Maybe some more specific description of what it is doing when you say "floods out" could help with suggestions. Such as, during starting? On acceleration? Cold engine? Warm engine? you get the idea. I'm sure someone here can get ya pointed in the right direction at least....

I don't remember where I found it on the net, but there is a parts breakdown of that carb. I've never had the problem with getting too much gas. If something was put together in the wrong place, I could see it being a problem. What are your needle settings on your carb. Somewhere close to about 1 turn out is a starting point of some of the carbs, could be 1 1/4 turn out, or 3/4 turn out. IIRC that parts breakdown had needle settings on it that corresponds with which part number carb that you have. The needle valve that you replaced might not be seating correctly, or the arm could be bent incorrectly.

thanks i have got a carb diagram but i dont know what the setting are for the needle valve replacement......i think the guy i bought it from might have let the foam air filter get sucked down into the carb so i'm going to pull the caps out whare the factory sealed it and make sure the main jet is ok

Sounds like a needle and seat issue to me, here is a link to some good info, not on your specific carb model, but should be very helpful anyway... Read up first though, the main jet is NOT under a welch plug, depending on carb series you will have 1 or 2 plugs and they will be the high and low speed jets...

Good luck with your repair, hope this helps.
