  • CCW 340

Got this CCW 340 with the original clutch on it. Can anyone tell me if they were 30mm tapered or Keyed shafts or something else? Been trying to pull the clutch, but it's not coming. Used penetrating oil and heat... Broke the clutch puller trying to get this thing off. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Are there threads inside the clutch? If it's a tapered shaft, when the crank bolt is removed, there will be threads inside the clutch. I've cut off a 3/8" bolt, slipped it in the hole, and then threaded in the bolt that fits the threads in the clutch. This pushes the clutch against the crank to remove it.

Don't think it's a tapered shaft. I can see on the back side of the clutch were the crank comes out of the motor but can't be sure if it is, or isn't tapered. I built a jig with a 2 ton bottle jack and broke the jig that's how tight it's on. I put penetrating oil on the back side of the clutch hoping it will seep in.

I have removed some stubborn clutches by taking the motor and let it hang by the clutch. Us what ever you have that will work to fit between the clutch and engine as close to crank as you can. Then use a bolt you dont care about and thread it in the crank a good long ways and hit the bolt with a big honkin hammer! This is pounding the crank out of the clutch. You have to be careful though because ruining the clutch if the braces slip away from near the crank will not be good. The threads in the crank can get damaged too if the bolt is not threaded in enough. Every time I do this I always ruin the head of the bolt so expect that to happen.

After taking the crank bolt out, look into the hole on the end of the clutch. You should see either threads on the clutch or a key slot.

              Update

Played around with trying to get that clutch off the CCW all day. It just didn't want to come off and I tried everything. Ended up cutting it off. Would of like to have saved the clutch, oh well. It is a 30mm tapered.

Joe, probably had a clutch like a sled. 30mm taper. you need a tool like this to pop them off.

You can make your own removal tool. Take a bolt and cut off the head so it is just longer than the hole in the crankshaft is deep. Take another bolt that threads into the clutch, it will push against the first bolt which pushes against the bottom of the hole in the crank. An air impact will help, it's much easier than holding the clutch from turning along with the ratchet.

I didn't have a impact handy so I just put some nylon rope in the exhaust port. Worked great.

Did that and it wouldn't come off. I beat it with at 10lb sledge most of the day. It seemed to be fused to the crank.
