I have a 16hp Briggs and today while I was running it the engine would speed up and not idle down. I could feel that the governor was not engaging the governor crank. So I took the crankcase cover off to inspect the governor and everything appears ok. Is there anything else that would cause this or was the governor just stuck? The weights have some play in them, but move freely and don't seem to bind.

Check to see if your throttle cable/linkage is sticking, and check to see if the choke control is not loose or sloppy.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

The throttle cable moves easily, and choke control looks ok. The engine revs up on its own to the point where I have to shut it off in fear of destruction. Have you ever heard of a governor getting stuck. Are they expensive to replace?

My first guess would be a broken governor spring, or that the linkage mounted on the shaft coming out of the block has come loose and isn't letting the governor do anything
