  • Engine shaft extension??

The shaft on my 16hp briggs is to short to go all the way through my salsbury drive pulley. How far does it have to be in order to be safe and fuction? The Bolt that screws into the shaft doesnt even reach the tapped hole in thaft.Shaft extension? Is it normal to have a couple inches of empty space in bore??

yep, perfectly normal. the standard length for a brigs crank is 2 29/32 (almost 3 ") The crank will go far enough that the area where the belt rides is supported. make sure the keyway is cut so that the key can't fall out, or fill the void with spacer/ washers to keep the key from walking out. then find the correct length bolt and you should be good to go. If your engine has a short crank, (shorter than mentioned above) I would be a little nervous about running it

Thanks a million.I did notice that one of the salsbury drive clutches I had has a threaded bore at the end for a puller. The info on the keyway is appreciated also.Stress level is now much lower!
