brigg 16hp flat twin fuel pump question

I need to know just how far away the gas tank can be put away fromm the engine on a 16hp flat twin briggs in my scrambler.I put a gas tank in the front left corner in the stock location with a primer bulb.The engine runs then runs out of fuelk and dies.The primer bulb stays hard and I have clear fuel to see if their are any air leaks.I rigged the tank above the engine on the air cleaner then the engine runs fine.I have always had gravity fed fuel feeds on all of my garden tractors so I have no idea what the amount of lift the vacuum fuel pump is supposed to have.1987 16hp briggs and stratton.Thanks in advance.

My advise to you is,to install an electric fuel pump.This way you get around any problems regarding distance from the tank.A low pressure (6-8 psi) pump will do the trick.
