  • JLO Rockwell 297L Oil Change?

Hello, I would like to start off by saying what a great Website You guys have here. I just bought my first Max 6x6 a week ago and have learned alot from the forums here. I wouldn't know where to start on my project without the information on here. OK, so I hope this ain't the dumbest question ever asked here but here goes anyways... I have an old JLO 297 motor in my max and I cant find a oil drain or fill hole anywhere? Does it have one and if it does, what oil should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

    Hi Derrum,
Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new purchase. Your JLO 297 is a two stroke engine, and it uses the gas/oil mix to lubricate and cool all of the internal parts of the engine when it's running. The engine crankcase doesn't take any oil at all. Hard to believe when you here one screaming along, but all of the lubrication is provided by what you mix in the fuel.

There is a brass hex-head plug on the back (I believe) of the JLO engine that allows any extra fuel/oil that may have accumulated in the crankcase to be drained (from a stuck float, or a broken diaphragm on the carburetor, for example). It's a bit of a pain to drian when the engine is in the machine, but I think it can be done.

There are plenty of debates on the best two-stroke oil to mix with your gas, so search the forums to get an idea of what's out there. I run a brand called Golden-Spectro in my two strokes. Good luck!
