  • Checking engine RPM

I have a Kohler Command 20 and would like to check my engine rpm at idle. I have an auto multimeter that can also check engine RPM's, but it's minimum setting is 4 cyl. Any way I could possibly check using this tool? From what I researched, the RPM's may read double, but I think I could do the math to adjust
If this will work, what should I attach the red lead on my multimeter to?

I bought a tiny tach for my attex to check rpm at idle and at full throttle. I remember something about them selling a special one for kohler engines. There was something funny about them, but i dont remember what. I would look into getting one for your engine so you know what it is at full throttle too.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Go to your local hobby shop and ask for digital tach for model airplanes. There only 25 bucks and work like a charm. You will need to draw a line with a piece of chalk on side of motor to read. Clutch or screen that turns when running.

        TACHOMETER/HOURMETER better than a tiny tach L@@K | eBay

Link to a generic tiny tach for $35 for the extra ten bucks you can monitor your rpm, $45 gets you the real deal.

I bought one of these.....it didn't work so well. It had interference issues, but after numerous tries hooking up the sense lead different ways, I finally got it to read somewhat reliably. Trail Tech TTO Tach-Hour Meter Computer Digital Gauge | eBay

Next I tried one similar to this. Small Engine Tachometer Tach and Hour Meter Hourmeter | eBay
Same manufacturer I think. It worked perfectly and was much cheaper, less than $20 if I remember right. I should be able to dig up the sellers email address if anyone wants it.

I ended up getting that one on Amazon the other day...$20 including shipping, but just found another one like that on eBay for $10 with free shipping

Looks like you just wrap a wire around one of the spark plug wires. Sounds simple enough...
