  • Old max jlo 292 electrical problems. Coils? Full spark then no spark....

Hey guys I can not figure out my max ii electrical problems. First off its a 70-71 with a jlo 292. Some times the machine runs great, then it will run very poor. Then out of no where it wont start. I have been chasing this issue for weeks. I thought it was the headlights so I disconnected them. (because it would run aweful with them on, then ok when i turned them off). So I replaced the ignition, ran great for 10 mins. I parked it,went to start it, started and ran for 5 secs, died and wouldn't start. I tested the spark plug for spark, sometimes it would and seconds later it would not spark, then weak spark then a few seconds of strong spark then no spark and so on. I am completely lost. Do i need a new coil? Or a rectifier? If it is a coil what kind is it and where could I get one?(localy)(is this off a common snowmobile I can find) I really want it fixed to go offroading for this holiday weekend!! Any advice would be great! Thanks a lot

    Points and condenser.

Check the points and condenser, pretty sure an engine of that year will have them. Usually under the flywheel or on the side of the block.

I would suspect the condensor first, however, as hard as they are to get to...you would be foolish not to replace both.
The timing procedure for the points is a little complicated. Here is a link to the manual http://www.6x6world.com/forums/conte...e-engines.html and a link to one possibility on points 01-012 - Bosch (Hirth, JLO, Kohler engines) heavy duty points
      Good luck

So I removed the engine and began disassembling, once I got to the flywheel, I could not get it off for the life of me, I used some WD40, and a harmonic balance puller with the 10mm bolts in the flywheel then still nothing after tightening then hitting the end with a hammer, I tried heating it up and still couldnt get it off, then I eventually broke the harmonic balance puller, the tip broke apart and the threaded rod bent like a hockey stick, still nothing, Im afraid anything harder with damage the engine, What can I do, I stuck!!!

pics please... the best thing to do is let it soak for a day or to. Or you can do like i do and just break it.. which wouldnt be good!

They can be very unpleasant...... I wouldn't use heat, that could turn out very bad. I would use the puller, leaving pressure on it, let it sit over night. Retighten, smack bolt with hammer, retighten. Lube if desired. Sooner or later it has to pop. I just hope you have more patience than I do. LOL
