anyone have or have a good source for b&s flywheel 808772 for a 18hp vanguard? mine got shredded and can't find one anywhere. many places list them on the computer only to find out later that they are discontinued and obsolete. busted on ebay also.

    thanks trevor

You might look on heymow.com & see where all of the lawn mower racers get them. Some of them run aftermarket flywheels on their machines.

They also pop up on ebay every now and then too. There were two variations of the flywheel if I remember correctly, the older ones have a slightly different face on the backside of them compared to the older style ones, so make sure you get the right one by comparing it to the one on your Vanguard.

thanks guys, i'm checking ebay and nothing so far. went to heymow and waiting for a reply. hopefully they are as helpful as the folks around here. i'm coming to the thought of replacing the motor altogether. anyone got any numbers on what i need, things like the shaft diameter and length, boy that sounds bad. im really leaning towards a 23 hp if it really comes to it. from what i gather they fit right in but you have to adapt the exhaust. i could really use some advise as to where to buy and what else might be needed. this situation really bumms me out after all the effort i put into mybigfoot.

        thanks trevor

            hi,
            b&s flywheel
The drive teeth or ring gear as more commonly known
plastic and alloy teeth were available and both used a poly/plastic starter gear
I have just recently sourced a steel ring gear flywheel [the engine allready had a steel gear starter so u can imagine the original alloy ring gear was chewed out ] previous owner agh agh ...
I did a search no replacable ring gears are available
Ring richards relics for a second hand unit
            ### remember that the steel fly wheel will dictate what charging system [magnet size ]
Therefore purchase the stator with flywheel
16amp stator and flywheel is the item u r chasing

hey guys thanks for all the advise. talset i have tried b&s and they don't have it, obsolete. the motor is out of an 01 bigfoot. tomo, the part that got munched on the flywheel is the magnets. they aren't totally destroyed but many of them have big chuncks broken off and now i'm not sure it's any good. i took it to a b&s authorized dealer and they told me it was cooked. the alternator coil also got damaged but that part has been superseeded by a newer part. i thought of richards relics and i'll call to see if he has one and try to pick his brain on a replacement motor. well lesson is don't let anything fall behind the flywheel. brand new engines has 23 hp b&s for $1299.00 plus shipping and then get the muffler but i'm not quite sure which motor to get based on the output shaft dims....1" or 1 1/8 and then the length. don't really want to have to replace the motor but........
any info is helpful as far as the 23hp particulars.

The shaft size you require is determained by the shaft size you have if you want to utilize your existing clutch. Most likely you are dealing with a 1 inch keyed shaft. If that is the case any one inch keyed shaft 23briggs vanguard will work. I would suggest a length of about 2 3/4 inch. Hope that helps.
