  • Timing on a JLO 440

    Hello everyone,
IT has been a VERy long time since i posted last. I am still messing with my BIGMAX. I finally have all of the parts to put the engine back together (JLO 440). I have the engine together but cannot figure out how to time the stator plate. My Flywheel has NO marking on it at all. I removed the #1 head after torquing it all down..so that I could time the thing based on the manual (Rotate crank counterclockwise. The points should open at .083-.103 inches. This is based on the counterweight assembly being over-ridden using a pin to lock out the timing gear cam on the flywheel.

So, the question is: Do I just make a mark on the flywheel when the piston is at TDC...and mark the flywheel based on the fan housing datums for Ign, Start or run?

I hope this all makes sense..it is partially paraphrased from the rockwell engine repair manual and timing section.

I really hope to get this thing going...it has been 2 years and hundreds of dollars...just sitting making me pretty frustrated.

    Thanks

    Chris

The manual says use a dial indicator on #1 piston set to 0 at tdc and a continuity test light on the blue wire of #1 coil and ground. After setting the point gap and with the locking pin in place.
Turn the flywheel ccw till the light dims that's when the points open. The dial indicator should read .083 to .102 before tdc
Adjust to spec by turning the armature plate.
Cylinder #2 checked the same way (blue/yellow wire on #2 coil and ground) but instead of turning the armature plate adjust the points to get it within specs.
no marks on the flywheel required.

Hope it works out for you.
