20 hp kawasaki question

i have a 98 conquest and was wondering if the kawasaki motor has that fiber cam gear that the john deer lawn mowers have had problems with

the motor number is ( DS12 ) and vin on unit is ( cb14496 ) i have 900 hrs on it

Heres a website with exploded views of the engine. double check to see that it's the rigth FD620D as there are several iterations of this engine.

it shows that you can get both steel and fiber cam gears i was hoping to find out if it has fiber or steel they say the fiber ones break at 1000 hrs

I don't know what they have, but I do know of several FD620's ............ more than several That have well over 1000hrs on them. I have not heard of any such issues. Would be interested in any info you might dig up though. Currently I have 2 "project Conquests", both with over 1000hrs, but I have not tried to start either of them.

I was told all pre 2001 FD620's have plastic cam gears, JD stocks the all steel upgrade, i have one at the shop that stripped all the plastic teeth off it

i was just going to ask the exact same question.guess it time to tug this kawasaki out.

the dealer told me that hes positve the DS12 models have the steel gear but i guess i ll find out rockdoctor said he knows of more than several with more than 1000 hrs and no problems

it runs great no problems just reclutched it
