  • How many is too many hours?

I know it depends on how it was taken care of during its use but is there like a rule of thumb like rebuild or replace every 800 hours for example?
Im currently looking into buying my first 6x6 maybe 8x8 and I seen all kinds of different numbers and just wondering what was considered high mileage in the 6x6 world?

On my way home I have a lawn mower/cycle repair shop and just stopped in to ask a few question about these types of engines "from what I understand these are basically lawn mower engines" and asked what would be the price on rebuilding a 18hp vangaurd "i just used for a example" He never gave me any type of price as he said he would actually have to see the engine get some numbers and go through it,but he said those engines cost in the ball park of $800-$1300 and wouldnt be really cost effective to rebuild as he said it will be a good fine engine rebuilt it still wouldnt be as good as a new one,He recommended just to buy a new engine and swap them out.

    Is this solid advice?

Sounds solid for the most part except you can rebuild them bigger and better than new. pricing seems about right for a small block, and some people like to go new, but its all up to you and your desired features.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Great question P.of Doom,I have seen machines reaching near destroyed condition with as little as 500 hrs on them, its who owned it and maintained it,myself i usually kept machines till in and around 5K hours, tires at around 1K hrs(the old runamuks),have replaced a couple motors around the 2500 to 3000 mark, chains bearings etc between 8 and 1200 hours, this was with maintenance schedule stuck too,the engines I replaced were before oil filters were in place and they got worked real hard in the summer, and yes I did not rebuild I replaced with new and in some cases a more modern engine,I certainly would always replace with new ignition carb and all gives you the best chance of no issues.

5,000 hours,I had no idea they lasted that long! I thought 500-1000 was getting on the high hours time. Thats good to know.
Another question I had was how do these machines do in the hot summer? Do they have any heat issues when you riding hours in 90 degree heat through trails?

On the opposite note I see the conquest models have a radiators and are liquid cooled are these more trouble, what I mean is do these fail more often then a standard air cooled engine as there is more to go wrong with them?

Issue in the heat, random vapor lock in the fuel system, ignition coil failures, this is what I have experienced mind you a well placed marine bilge blower to get hot out and cool in helps with air or liquid cooled,I ran with the hood off in the extreme heat.As far a water eaters they have less issues with the temp, and all in all less issues period I have had a fan bearing fail but honestly I prefer the liquid cooled Argo,s.NCT
