  • Engine trouble!!

Hi, so I have an 84 argo with the Kohler twin 17 series II engine. I have replaced the condenser, cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor, cleaned the fuel tank, replaced fuel lines and filter, and rebuilt one of the brake master cylinder and calipers. I can go out and close the choke, start it up, open the choke as normal once warmed up and drive away. After say 45 minutes or so, it starts to act up. As you try to give throttle the argo sputters and goes nuts, almost wants to cut off. When you try to turn it, it really bogs down. I can stop the argo and try slowly to give throttle, it may move with no trouble and sometimes not. Also when I was backing the argo into my shelter on my ramp it stopped half way up, I gave it more and more gas.....didn't move. Finally it took hold and almost made my son and myself do a face plant into the front of the argo. I was wondering if the drive belt could be something I should check. Anyway this problem only seems to show up when I'm driving a while so I don't know if this heat related or not. Any help would be great! Thanks. By the way loving the forum......very helpful!

    Cheers

the drive belt or the clutch could bog it down. drive chains binding/bad bearing/ not getting enough fuel under a hard load. those r the things i would check. good luck.

You could have a coil or spark plug that is failing when it gets hot.
Pull the spark plugs when the engine is hot and make sure you have good spark on both.
If one looks wet its probably not sparking and the engine is running on 1 cylinder.

UPDATE: Well, I just started the argo today after posting this morning. Still ran semi-bad. Took it for a run not the same amount of power that I remember when I was a kid (my dads argo). Got back to the house, took the hood off and tried to reset the carburetor according to the Kohler manual. Still no difference. But I did notice that with the heated up engine bay the drive belt is really really loose and I have to use more throttle to make it move. When I let throttle go (idle) the belt slows down and rubs against the exhaust pipe shroud. Hopefully this gives a little more insight into my problem. Thanks again.
