  • Fuel Pump gone bad?

hey guys, got a question regarding the B/S style vacuum operated fuel pump...I started to suspect the one on my MULE to be the problem for issues ive been having. I tore the pulse line off just for the heck of it to see if i could suck/blow through it and to see if it had gas leaking past. i didnt get any gas out of it, however, when i would blow into it i would get air coming out through the little brass breather hole in the top of the pump. i found this odd, i have had numerous pumps like this and never found one i could do this with... So i grabbed an extra one that i had laying around, and it didnt do this, it was air tight. I installed it but have yet to try it out. has anyone got input on whether they think the original one is screwed up? or is this a style of pump i have yet to see?

    Thanks guys/gals!

As far as I know, any of the pulse style pumps should be air tight at the pulse line. Any time they aren't, you end up with gas in the crankcase or no gas in the float bowl (or both). Hope this helped!

Thanks don. I been pissin with this stupid muel all day..with no luck. lol i dunno WTF the issue is. i need to do research and adjust the valves, i'm not sure what the problem is honestly.. One day it was running fine, the next its like it runs outta fuel!? even with my replacment fuel pump. i got no clue what the deal is. ive had carb off about 10 times today, all the jets out and everything spit shined so i know it aint dirty in there. i just cant figure out what the deal is. i did some reading that valves are picky on these stinkin things, but i mean cmon...that bad? that fast!? lol Ugh, oh well, thanks again though don. ill see what i can come up with!

I ran stainless steel line from the electric fuel pump on the gas tank. The pulse type pump quit one to many times on me.

i adjusted the valves, it helped get rid of noise and seemed to make it smoother running? but still eats up all the fuel outta the bowl of the carb. I'm waiting on my new jets to show up so hopefully that'll take care of it. The plug does look pretty rich too so i'd say i screwed them all up. lol OOPS! first time i've ever messed up jets that bad! oh well, live and learn! atleast its rich, and not lean!....MELTDOWN!!!...lol that'd suck wang!

Figured it out...boy did it take some time. I had established that i didnt have fuel delivery issues, so then Joe H and i suspected that i had a "sticky" float valve. I ordered one and had been waiting. It supposed to be in tomorrow, but tonight..i went out and stared at the mule for a while...thought about what was going on... I had cleaned, checked, adjusted carb about 100 times this week. I checkd fuel tank and its contents for debris, but nothing was in there. I even hung an "alternate fuel source" on the ROPS system to eliminate suction issues...however i still had issues. tonight i was gonna pull the "NEW" fuel pump off and make sure it was clean...first line i pulled off was the "pulse" line that pumped the fuel pump..when i pulled it off, a drip of oil came out... This was intersting. i HAVE seen oil in pulse lines before, and it caused my 6x6 to not pump fuel. There was a "low spot" in the line where oil was able to puddle and prevent pump from getting its pulse...so with this in mind, i pulled my saggy pulse line off the pump and the plastic "catch can device" that bolts to top of the engine block. This catch can acts as 2 things, in California, it works at part of emissions.. In the other 49 states, its just a catch can for oil that comes up the pulse line. when i pulled the line, oil ran out of it. Here's the problem i said.. so i cleaned it out with ether, and installed it. Took a ride, same problem...hmm...so i pulled line again, it had oil in it again..wtf? well..i then installed a piece of clear tubing to see exactly what was going on.. I took a ride, and kept an eye on it. I also left the bed un latched so i could see quickly what was going on. about 3 mins into riding it, if that, the problem arose, i quickly jmped off, whipped the bed up and seen the problem. The catch can thingy was full of oil, i then flipped the seat up, tore the pulse line off and found that it was not pulsing, cuz oil had filled the catch can thing. Tadah....so it was infact a delivery problem. I then thought "Why?" is this thing filling up? so i pulled the dip stick..it was easily 1" over full. That'll do it! UP-hill runs, and LONG WOT runs, had enough sloshing effect that it would toss oil up the line, and into the catch, filling it up, and loosing my pulse for the pump..which would let the carb drain the bowl. I drove it home, drained the excess oil, and took a good long ride on it with no issues.

Let this be a lesson to those who have the mule 610, DO NOT over fill your crank case, and MAKE SURE you push dipstick WHOLE WAY IN when checking your oil. Let me be the example in this lesson. lol With parts on the way that i do not actually need, i feel dumb, but on the other hand, i am now that much smarter!!

Thanks to all you guys on here that tried to help point me in the right direction. I did call Joe H to let him know exactly what was going on! He was glad to hear that i found the issue! I'm glad i talked to him and he kept me on the track of "not enough fuel flow" cuz i really did think that i was sucking the carb dry.. And also thanks to don for running HUGE JETS in TWIN carbs on the GBA...if 2 cyl 2 strokes can suck down fuel via 300 main jets ( i think that what you were tinkering with) than how come a 400cc single cylinder, single carb with 112 main cannot keep enough fuel in it?! lol i really thought about this damn thing..but i knew sooner or later, id get 'er dicked!
