  • Jlo L230 need help!

Hi, While i do own a 8x8 vehicle (argo 750) this post doesn't particularly pertain to that. I have a 1971 Rupp Ruppster which came stock with a Jlo L230. I have the original engine, and a parts engine. The main engine seems to be pretty clean and complete except it is missing a flywheel. My parts engine had a flywheel so i figured I'd pull it, make the swap and I'd be good to go, but not quite. I've pulled plenty of flywheels in my day but have never seen one like this. I tried: gear puller, double propane torches (got the metal glowing, with pressure from puller), harmonic balancer puller (left overnight), harmonic balancer puller with pneumatic impact wrench, Liquid wrench soaked in all cracks and crevices, and finally, when the harmonic balancer puller stripped the threading right off the three bolts, I mounted my own heavy duty bolts by dropping nuts inside the three openings in the flywheel and getting them to catch the bolts and screw on (not easy) and tried the harmonic balancer puller and next thing you know chunks of the flywheel were flying all over the place. I've come to the conclusion that an engine sitting in a shed for 40 or so years (just guessing) has had enough time to fulling weld itself to the flywheel. The flywheel is pretty shot, even if i could get it off I wouldn't want to use it with chips in it. So basically my question is, is there anyone who either has a flywheel that will fit this engine or does anyone know where I could possibly find one? Also if someone has an L230 in descent shape that they'd like to sell I'd likely be interested in that also.
    Thanks!

Is this the right flywheel? I haven't had a 230 apart in a long, long time, but this looks familiar. I've had to heat flywheels up with an Oxy-acetylene torch when they were really stuck, but I don't think I've ever had one as bad as you're describing. As long as you're not worried about the flywheel any longer, you may want to try that. Just make sure you don't heat up the crank too much, and you'll want to change the seal on that end when you're done.

      Hi Don,
Thanks for the reply, Unfortunately i don't have an oxy-acetylene torch, wish i did, maybe i'll pick one up, seems handy to have around. And yes that's the right piece but that's only the back panel to the flywheel, I need the whole thing. I think I have a lead on one, hopefully, this is driving me crazy. Thanks for the advice and the link!
