  • amphibs tire suggestions

This is a topic thats been discussed and talked about many times . I would like to start a new topic called " amphib tire suggestions " . I would like each of us that owns an amphib , to tell what kind of tires they are now using and why ? This will help the new person , that buys a used amphib , tires to choose from , based on what they use their amphibs for .

The terrain you take your amphib most often in , and the percentage of times you take your amphib into deep water , will determine the tire you need , for the riding you do "most often" .

Dan , Lee ,and myself , all run aggressive PURE MUD tires , in combination ,or a complete set of six tires .

Dan rides mainly in the swamps , so his amphib riding is varied between very soft mud , watery mud, and swamp water . He is now running a combo of Vampire and Swamp fox tires . This has worked BETTER than the terra tires that came on it from the factory . Yes,, the terra tires swam great ,, but in the swamp Dan got stuck too often with them, , but now in those same places he does not .

Lee rides his Argo Frontier mostly in atv parks , that are mostly mud , soupy mud ,and water mud pits , not deep enough to sink the big tire atv,s . His six mudbug tires work great on the Frontier . The 4-wheelers don,t laught at him any more he says . They now want him to go first on any new mud trail , or that deep in water .

I only run Gators on the front ( V-facing foward for traction ) and the Terra tires middle and rear ( V-facing backwards for water speed ) I ride mostly in river bottom land . It is a combination of flooded bayous , deep mud,,soupy mud , narrow rivers , some times a little water current . This tire combination works well for me , for the kind of riding I do .

I bought my Max IV because it would float and swim in the water . But , as time went on ,, I found out that I did not use my Max much in deep water , or was not in deep water for very long . I have decided now , that slower water speed , that will get me to the other side ,,is good enough for me .

    reference mud bugs

I can tell you from experence that Lees Frontier equipped with Mud Bug goes through soft clay type mud, and sticky mud better than anything I have ever seen. He makes the high lifted quads with big tires look very, very bad. On the bad side they barely swim, but that is not what he needs in his area. His tires stay on top of the mud and clean out where mine dig in, but if you put mine in watery mud you can see a big difference in the bite, but in straight pure mud he has me beat! As I get around more and more AATV's perhaps I will see a better mud combination than a Mud Bug equipped frontier but I doubt it! Again it's all about where you live and what you do with your machine. For Lee, he is sold on the Mud Bugs and I certainly understand why!

I run all 26 inch tires on my Max IV . Both the Good year Terra tires , and the Gator tires are not true to size , but run short .

              26" tires

I run a 26" vampire and 27" swamp fox plus. With 3 pounds of air both of these tires sit 26" tall on MaxIV rims. If you take the air pressure up on the foxes they will get taller and taller. The vampires are a really wide tire and must have at least a 5/16" wheel spacers availabe at pep boys to keep these tires away from the inside of your tub and you must run them with about three pounds of air because they flex so much with lower air pressure and will rub you tub. The Vampires are also heavy weighing about 33 pounds each. The vampires excell in soupy watery mud or water with mud on the bottom but they dig a hole really fast in soft mud with out water and will get you stuck faster than six straight foxes. The vampires are also hard to control in water since they throw a lot of water to the side. Turning is best done by leaning. If you run six foxes with the V's facing < > < (forward-backward-forward) they will give you about 1 1/2 miles per hour in the water and control much better than vampires. The Vampires will pull out of the water like a sling shot but dig in when you come out with softer mud. I am considering going back to all foxes because I think they stay on top of the mud instead of digging in but you cannot beat the performance of the vampires in watery mud. They also climb over logs really, really well! Here is a link to swamp fox plus tires. If I were going to buy Vampires for a MaxIV I would consider the 25x12x12 which will sit 25" high on a MaxIV rim. They are about a hundred times better than the 26" Goodyears in the mud but you have got to ready to winch yourself in the soft stuff! It also depends on the type of riding you do most of the time. The foxes are the toughest tire I have ever seen. I have hit cypress knees, stumps, root systems and every other bad thing with the foxes and never had a flat ( I did lose a bead once when I hit a stump about 15 mph). Hope this helps you!

This is a larger picture of the Swamp Fox Plus tire . The Swamp Fox,s will swim better with the V facing forwards and mud better too . You can see in the picture how the treads curve outwards on the side of the tire . This is what makes them swim . The Swamp Fox Plus is a really good compromise for some one who wants a more aggressive mud tire , that has moderate swimming ability .

Any pics of this frontier with Mudbugs? What size does he run?
This topic has mostly covered the big machines with big tires so far.
If anyone has any info on what works & doesn't in the 22" range for the smaller machines like the Attex & Maxx II please add your experience.

Look at the video I just posted with video highlites. Lees Frontier is pulling out of a mud pit that he went through that stuck every high lifted quad that tried the hole. Beautiful thing that Argo!
