  • Argo tyres, info please.

Any info appreciated on this one, could save an expensive mistake. I have an 1985 Argo I/C 8 K17 with Runamuk 20 x 11 - 8 tyres on at the moment and it will need new tyres shortly. We're quite limited over here to available types and sizes so the questions are,

What size can I fit, what's the largest. ?

Is it worth changing the rims to 9", 10", 11", or 12"? There seems to be more choice of tyre in these rim sizes especially 11" and 12" (mower tyres, garden tractors etc)

What tyres are NOT suitable bearing in mind it will hardly ever swim, if at all ? It will however play on rock, shale, slick clay and deep mud.

    Cheers Guys, any info appreciated.

Pretty sure 22" x 10 x 8 will fit those mid 80's models but no larger. try to stick to a 2 or 4 ply tyre
6 ply is too rough on your ride
Too aggressive a tread and it will wear out chains/bearings and sprockets.

I have seen lots of these used on Argo's here
    Tyre Rite - Detail

Another brand same basic tread pattern
Duro HF 240 - TerrainTyres.co.uk another brand same basic tread pattern

    Your best deal IMHO
    22X11.00-8 43J (4 Ply) BKT AT108 Argocat ATV Tyre 'E' Marked - £57.60 : , - All Terrain Tyres

These are more expensive Maxxis Wildcat C828
    Agricultural Tyres - ATV Tyres

Prob best with the Argocats. save a few quid by buying 8 of them. you will want them to match anyhow.
Have fun in the Mud... we still have 2 foot of snow here.

Many thanks Moosetalker, that's the tread pattern I was looking at, thanks for the links. It's not worth changing rim sizes then if those tyres are adequate.
My Argo runs duplex chains and splines on the rear three axles (front is pegged), would an aggressive tread destroy those?

It's a bit windy here today but sun is out and it's quite warm, just a jersey on today, no jacket needed. We had a few good falls of snow where I am, about six inches a couple of times and it stayed for over a week at a time. Brought the place to a standstill as the numpties in their little shopping cars block all the roads and stop the 4x4's getting around.

        hi
duro Hf 244 knob tire donot swim or steer well to grippy
Duro Hf 255 agricultural v lug swim ok and steer well [allows a little slip for easier str ]
These and one other ,a Kenda bear claw 6 ply no swim and hard ride were fitted to a friends argo 6x6
I have HF 255 duro fitted to a swamp fox swim ok steer good [originally terra grips ]
Good Year Terra Grips are even better but finding outside the USA is difficult
Also tyres with round shoulders will help transmission steer .

Yes Tomo is right the knob type don't swim well If at all especially with a 1000lb moose on board .
Cheap ass Outfitter trick to save a few bucks along with cheap Chinese chain Then we end up doing repairs in a swamp

Stick with the 8" rim. its an Argo specific offset as well as a 5 bolt pattern or is yours one of the old 3 bolter's?
Some have said you can take a sharp knife to the knob portion of the Argocats and shave some off from between the tire crossbars. So they will look more like these.

          22x11.00-8 2 Ply Kenda K277 Dirt Dog - £0.00 : , - All Terrain Tyres

When you get your tires mounted whichever one's you decide on. Air them all up to 5 lbs and measure the outside diameter.
Then place the 4 largest diameter tires on the 4 center axles

The 2 smallest on the front dropping the air pressure to 3 lbs.

The remaining 2 drop the air pressure to 4 lbs for the rear.
          This will facilitate turning.

          Cheers Mate.

Another thing is if you go wider you may need wheel spacers. You can avoid this by grinding the side knobies of the inner side of each tire, just a thought.

And if I were you I would update those front axles, the pegged ones are a pain and take the most punishment and are the hardest to fix when a pin goes south.NCT

Thanks for the info guys. Yes the front axles will be changed when the frame comes out. Seeing as how I've only used it for about ten minutes the idea is to get it something like, try it out, get the parts and then do a complete strip down and change what's necessary.

So, how about 8 of these ?
22x12.00-8 4 Kenda K299 Bear Claw, bearing in mind I want to use them for mud, clay, shale etc and not particularly bothered about swimming. I know at 12" wide I may have to space them as it was kindly pointed out on here but I can live with that. I deal with the wholesaler of these so may get a good price.

Looks good to me,at 12 wide you should clear that.

They work great in the mud, but they don't swim at all. 6X6World member boncrshr used these tires on his Hustler 950 and these were the results he saw first hand. I very highly doubt you'll need spacers for 12" wide tires. I've seen many, many people run 12" wide tires on their AATVs without any use of spacers at all, including Argos.
