Max 12 inch K-Lock wheels and lugnuts

Hi folks,

I just bought a full set of RI 12 inch K-lock wheels for my Max IV. Do the RI 12 inch k-lock wheels use the standard tapered lugnuts ? I presently have a set of MuddOX 9 inch wheels on my Max that are bolted on with the factory tapered lug nut. Can I use the factory tapered lug nuts with the RI 12 inch K-lock wheels ?

Hi Pete,

I've not purchased a set in a while, but I believe that the 12" RI wheels do NOT use the tapered lug nut. You can still use your current lug nuts, though. Just turn them around so the taper is facing outward. One thing I like to do is drill the wheel stud holes about 1/32" bigger in the rims. They're often a VERY tight fit initially and when mud/sand or the slightest corrosion get in there, it can really bind the wheel to the wheel hub if you need to get it off. Drilling them a bit bigger helps deter this, and doesn't negatively affect them. I know it hurts to drill holes in something brand new, but it seems to help out a lot.

I talked to Jay at RI. He said that he will be sending out a set of 30 flat base lug nuts for these wheels. He says that these 12 inch wheels can be hard to get over the studs. Have you had any trouble putting the wheels onto the studs ? What size drill did you use to open the holes up ? Did you use a drill press ? Thanks for any advice.

Yeah, they can be a pain to get on/off the studs at times. Did you see my previous post about it? I just drill them out a bit bigger with a hand drill; no need for a press. Honestly, overdrilling the 30 holes should take less than a couple minutes.

Try and fit them on the hubs before you drill them though. And if you do have to drill them, just make them a VERY tiny bit larger. Not very much at all or you'll risk ruining them because they'll be too loose on the hub. Try putting them on the hub first, then taking them off, and repeat this a couple times. This way they should go on easier each time you install them.

Right... sometimes all you need to do is scrub the powdercoat off from the I.D. of the stud holes....

Thanks for the input. I will try hand-fitting the wheels a few times just to remove the excess paint. If that is not enough then I will drill them out slightly. Now all I need is Interco to start selling the Vampire ASX 26x13x12 tires again and then I'll be all set !

What did they charge for these? my old original wheels on my max iv are pretty beat up. In fact I'm sure the are all running tubes because they won't seal.

The holes are tight on the lugs by design (by poor design). The problem arises when someone over tightens the lug nuts and crushes the rim slightly. That sticks it to the lug and it's a hassle to remove. Just tighten them securely and remember it's not a CAT dozer so it doesn't require 200 foot pounds. People just love to over tighten lugs even on cars.

I plan to keep my 9 inch MuddOx wheels. At this point, I'm not sure what I'm doing with tires....still waiting on the Vampire ASX's....jury is still out on the Vendetta's. And tires are getting too expensive to make another tire buying "mistake", so I think I will hang back a while and wait for more feedback to come in on the latest 12 inch tires. BTW, I paid around $80 each for the 12 inch K-lock wheels from RI.
