  • Tires for 1979 argo

    Hello,

I am looking to purchase tires for a 1979 argo 6x6.
It currently has the original goodyear runamuck tires on it, which needless to say are all dry rotted.
The rims are 5 bolt rims. I was looking at purchasing six new tires with rims and need some suggestions on what to buy. I want a tire that will work with tracks as I plan to purchase tracks at a later point.
I will be using the Argo for fishing and offroading mostly. Will occasionally drive in the snow during the winter. Thanks all

One of the best replacement tires for all around use is the 22x10x8 Argo tire. Call Tim or Mike at Adair Argo for prices. If you are looking at tracks a set with the offset aluminum wheels may be the ticket for you. The Argo tire isn't cheap but works well.

Body sag may be a factor for you, as well as the type of track you plan to run. Do you have 1 1/4" axles? I think I would avoid tracks on the older smaller axles.

That machine should have 1-1/4 flanged axles with 62mm bearings inner and outer and either single or double 50 chain. For tires I'd recommend the at101's on seven inch wide rims (what you have now), the Argo 22's are great tires but may not work with the older bodied machines and tracks due to sag. The original 20's on your machine have probably grown to 22's by now.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

That's true tracks may put too much stress on the small axels, maybe just a set of good tires then. Thanks for the insight and recommendations all.

I have 8 used with rims 22X11X8 Runamucks I'll sell for $200 plus shipping. Fair condition, would work good with tracks. See parts for sale for additional info.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I went with the Argo AT189 22x10x8 tires and rims. Hopefully they fit. Will let everyone know how they work out.

                      Tires for 1979 argo

Just got my new tires put on the argo.
I must say imo, it looks 10 years newer with them on compared to the dry rotted tires I had on previously.
Haven't been able to drive it much since I got the new tires, but I am sure they will do the trick.
The top of the tires comes within less than an inch from the tub due to body sag.
The last pic is of the old dry rotted tires.

Looks Good, I'm thinkin' that strapping it down like that on a hot summer day would add to the sag at some point.

You're right there Nubs, 2nd pic shows the machine has already banana'd, the best way to strap these machines is always at the axles.

The machine and the tires both look good.

Very good point, I may have to find a new way to strap it down in the summer months.
I usually only use the straps when I am hauling it somewhere.
And I only tighten the straps enough to keep the Argo from bouncing up off the trailer bed.
I imagine it will eventually show the effects in body sag, which unfortunately, it already has to some extent.
