  • Tracks vs. tires

So, as in my earlier post, although I own five 4 wheeled UTV's, I'm a newbie to my '02 8x8 Conquest, with tracks, that I use in south Louisiana creekbeds with occassional quick sand bottoms. The vehicle does great with the tracks until I hit a pocket of deep water and then I need to get the push pole out to get across. It is also a really slow and tough ride on the winding hard dirt trails to get to the creek beds. Mild turn are not bad, but tight turns seem really hard on the drive train. Just wondering if tires would do better for both trails and creek beds with deep holes.

Haven't yet removed the tracks, but my ARGO tires are completely worn out. The previous owner put 4 new cheap ATV 'button type' tires on the 4 corners to get adequate track traction, but the remaining 4 middle ARGO tires are pretty slick. At $1200 to replace the 8 ARGO tires, I want to make sure its the right thing to do. I'm assuming the ARGO paddle tires will get me slowly across the small pockets of deep water, but how long will they last on the hard dirt trails?? And once they wear a bit, will I need my push pole again?

I've got an old trolling motor and have contemplated fixing it to the transom, at just the right height, with a switch at the console, just to get me across the deep holes. (no steering, but that's OK). When not in use the motor will kick up when crawling over logs and such. (just don't try backing over the log without picking up motor, CRUNCH)

Have also contemplated replacing the 4 worn ARGO tires with another 4 cheap ATV "button type" tires to make it same all around. Seems it might turn better on hard dirt trails and still get me around the creek beds just fine. I know with my other UTV's (4 wheel), the turf type tires do better in the soft sand than the more agressive knobby tires, which quickly dig into the soft sand and leave me bottomed out. (thus the 8x8 purchase)

So that's my dilemma. What say you experienced men?

I restored a 1987 argo 8x8 I/C last year and put all new argo tires on. With the tracks, yes it won't swim very well but with just the tires it works great. These tires are made to last and yes they cost a lot but if you really want to swim with tires they are the way to go.

Sell the supertracks to offset the purchase of Adair tracks. They swim ok and mud like nobody's business. Plus they turn easily and put less strain on the drive train. You could also invest in track tuners to free up some power and help illuminate chain wrap.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Drew has got this right and he has been around as many AATV's as anyone I know. I won't dream of running in the swamps of Louisiana with out a set of Adair tracks. The Adair's will turn that conquest into a real beast with real capabilities.
