  • Tires for Magnum diesel

Good morning boys (and girls). The time is coming for the Magnum to start rolling on its own wheels again. So, the more I look at the old tires, the more I realize they're gonna last 5 minutes before half of them are flat. Some of them are OK, but most are in tough shape. So, looking for something to put on before the camping trip end of July.

    Criteria:
    -smaller than 24"
    -fits on 8" rim
    -don't have tracks
-don't need to swim (have outboard)
-good value (not "cheap", but not looking to help a CEO buy his new Donzi either)
    -mud performance not a must
    -snow performance is desirable
    -easy on the turf
    -easily available in Ontario

I do plan to use this machine primarily for camping on crown land. There's a trail for some of it, then there's a few lakes and portages. We had an old argo last year, and it worked well. He has 8 Carlisle Strykers. He's not a fan of them, as he's found they grip too much. I had looked at Maxxis 4 snow, but they only come in 2 ply, and I'd hate to rip them up on some rocks on the portage. Argo 24" are most likely out of the question $$$, plus the tools at the local dealer don't get back to me about price.

Other than camping a few times a year, it will be used around the house for random things, probably giving neices/nephews rides, and our own kids (once they're old enough). Will use it for some firewood gathering, and probably for bringing firewood from the wood shed to the house in winter.

So, its not like I'm gonna be out touring through the wilderness all the time. I don't hunt, and can't see myself taking up hunting either anytime soon. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I know that for all I describe, the 24" argo tires will probably fit best, just hard to justify that to the wife with a kid on the way, and building my shop at the same time.

I found a set of 8 24" Argo tires. They're older, unused tires. I can get them for essentially $100/tire plus taxes. Any ideas whether this is a good deal or not? They'll fit on the Magnum, just. Have been having a heck of a time trying to find something decent in an 8" rim.

I believe I saw the same tire at the Argo dealer here in Alaska for around $140 each.

24" are gonna be tight.i put 24" on my old conquest and I had to size them and trim some tread.

22's are more expensive, and I ain't paying more for less. I know 24's will be tight, and might require some trimming.

So, anyone else have any suggestions for tires?

            Nuff said.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
            Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

That's great Jim, except that after exchange rate of 1.25 CAN = 1.00 US, and shipping into the Great White North, I might as well have bought new ones from Argo. I'd come out further ahead.

Basically, best price tires up here, are roughly 20% higher price (comparing at par $), and most places ship free if you're over $250. I've compared to getting 8 tires shipped to my brother's box in Niagara Falls, but by the time I go all the way down there to pick them up, fuel, coffee, customs charges, fee at the box place, and exchange rate, I save about $5. Would have made sense a few years ago when things were a little more favorable for us Canucks to shop in the sunny south. Not anymore.

So, I guess my question now is, how many folks have successfully put 24" tires on their 24" center spacing axles? A little shaving doesn't bother me.
