not sure what you mean about a ''spare hub'' . i have a extra 5 lug hub off a max 2 11/4'' axle you can have if that's what you need. it still has about 3'' of axle sticking out of it. let me know. johnboy va. p. s. it's not a wheel exstension but has a 1 1/4 '' couple on it that can be connected to a axle and welded that would give you exstension.

oh, its a 5" extension, fyi. Just need one more. If I have to, i'll make one, but prefer just to find a used one.

Yes you will need extensions.
Perhaps try this, though I am no engineer. First even all tires to about one psi, measure each tire, arrange the larger two of three on end axles, now measure the outer circumference of all three tires on each side. Hopefully you marked everything down as it should give you a rough idea of inner circumference needed for the track. Next measure the inner circumference of the track which should be measured standing on side and outstretched.
Example, cut a string to length of outer circumference of tires which should connect over tires, if placed inside track it should contact the center of each guide and just or nearly touch at string ends. If you are ricorrect in your guessed shortness measurement it should be 8 inches off.

If the track is significantly shorter, perhaps the tracks are off a smaller wheel base/tired machine or perhaps you need the 18 inch tires similar to what attex used.

Im running a 21" tire, I don't know the other dimensions off hand. I was able to order some belting for steampunk type projects off ebay for pretty cheap and it looks good, it arrived last week. Trust me guys, there's no way these treads will fit and it confuses me greatly why not. I remove the muffler and deflated and used ratchet straps to deflate them nearly to the rims (all 3 tires on one side) then tried pulling the tracks on with a larger ratchet and with all of these precautions, I was still 8" short. There's not a snowballs chance in hell they will fit on as is. I am supposed to be using the extensions with the tracks? I do not have them currently on. I have some, but I think im one short of a full set.

The first time I installed that type of track on 21" tires I thought, no way, these won't fit. As Argojim pointed out, you really do have to get the air out of the tires to get the track over them, and its still a fight.

You'll need the axle extensions as well, and then with a lot of effort, it should fit. I use a heavy 20,000lb strap and pull the truck up to the back and winch the strap down tight, you can also use a heavy ratchet style strap and do the same.

Mike, do you have a picture of the tracks you are trying to mount?

What type/brand and size tire are you running? picture?
Do you have wheel extensions?
Those tracks should have only been made to fit a Max II or a longer track for the Max IV, could it be you are fighting the muffler for clearance/length issues?
Did you deflate and vacuum all the tires while trying to mount them? (removing and then fighting an end tire may have worked, but very tough. Still need deflating.)

These are all small things which could affect mounting.

Posting pictures receives educated guesses and advice from the other forum members who have been there.

he he, yeah freedom. hopefully they weren't short like mine. Mcmaster didn't have belting my size. they did have 3", which is my width but nothing thick enough, mine are 1/4" thick. Any other ideas on where to find belting? Ive been to about 30 different sites and most of them didn't have the ability to order online. I may need to call one of these guys, but first I figured id check if anyone else had a place to buy track material from? What was the name of that 6x6 parts site msafi? I hope I don't have to get another set, but just in case, itd be nice to have an extra. I got the beast really stuck today on a steep hill amongst stumps and redwood duff. Its becoming more clear I need these tracks and a mini winch.

Thanks for the replies guys. the tracks on "help me identify these tracks" look like my tracks. I am running on 21" tires already. I had a set of worn 22's i believe, but swapped them with the set on my spare max. Mcmaster looks like the ticket im looking for. I hope i can fabricate some extra ribs. I'll have to go by the scrapyard and pick up a block or 2 of aluminum as well. With all the rain this year we're getting, i sure could use those tracks now! every time i bring firewood up the the house, i rip up my dirt road running up the hill behind us.

I saw a pic of the older track guides on max6x6 parts website. Maybe they had some made or they surfaced with the clean out of RI.

just a thought, if the tracks are only 6 or 8 '' too short, once you add the extra belt and connect the tracks youmay not even need more guides. j.b.

No Mike those are generally refered to as waffle tracks. The tracks he described would've like the ones in the post " hell me identify these tracks".

An inch of tire makes a big difference. I bought my Max IV tracks with a set of tires and rimes. The tires were 22" Bear Claws. I couldn't even get the tracks on over them, even after vacuuming them down. I had a set of bald 22×11-8 Runamucks lying around so I tried them. I managed to get the tracks on but I couldn't inflate above 1 or 2 psi. The sidewall bulge was more than I was comfortable with not to mention the strain on the bearings. I broke down and ordered 6 new 21" AT-101s and just swapped everything over. The tracks went on nice and easy and 5psi tensioned them up perfectly.
