  • New tires on old rims ?

Greetings all ! This is my first post so i apologize ahead of time if is this is an old and well discussed topic. I inherited my grandfathers Argo Magnum 8x8 last weekend, it has seven bald tires & 1 New tire my grandfather purchased recently. . Apparently the guy at the argo shop he deals with told my grandfather that the new 22 x 10 x 8 tires won't fit on the runamuck rims but the Runamucks are also 22 x 10 x 8 so I don't understand why they won't fit. It leaves me wondering, Was he just trying to sell the tire with the rim? The tires alone are $150 Canadian and $200 with the rim... If you times that by seven it's an extra $350 plus tax for seven rims... I would probably buy one rim and tire together so I could have a spare, but I'd rather not by seven! Anyone else heard of this before? Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

    Welcome Kris,

So, you're just trying to replace a 22x10-8 tire with a new 22x10-8 tire? What tires are you planning on installing? Make sure there wasn't any confusion with the dealer between 8" and 9" tires. Other than that, it's a straight swap.

The tire guy is actually somewhat correct, there is a lot of variance between atv tire sizes because they are regulated by the government like automobile tires are. I do agree with Hydromike that in this scenario where you are using the same sized tires it should work, pending any damaged wheel issues that may be there.

I just got home and checked and the 1 new tire says "Argo" on it and the rest of them are all runamuck's .There's a half an inch of ice on the tire so I couldn't tell if there was any other words but they are definitely the exact same size 22" x 10" x 8". My plan is to buy one tire, try and put it on the rim and see how it goes. Thanks for the input !

Here in the US you can get runamucks again for about half of the new Argo tire cost.

I haven't heard that Argo has changed rim dimensions for the 22x10x8 tires ever so I believe that the rims are the rims are the rims.

Rim damage and rust would be a real issue.

Thanks again guYs, all but 2 of the rims look mint, rust and pealing paint on the other 2, nothin a lil elbow grease wont take care of.
John F, if you dont mind me asking, where can you find "runamuck's" in the U.S ? Ive been searching online, i havent found anything that says they are once again available. If they are that much lower in price it may be worth it to ship them here !

I got mine from Cedar Rapids Tire. [Oh, I should have included this: http://www.cedarrapidstire.com/home.php]
They can also be found at AtvTireStore.com and I believe they have them at Mudd-ox.

I would hit up http://www.atvtirescanada.com - they say they can get any brand of tire...

With the exchange rate and HST you folks pay, it's no wonder we get thousands and thousands of northern neighbors down here in the Niagara region of the NY every weekend. Folks come down with empty suitcases and leave with full suitcases and don't declare a darn thing at the border. For $80/tire on atvtirestore.com, free shipping on orders over $99 to a U.S. address and only a 2.5 hour drive, it's worth it to just have them drop-shipped over the border and head back home.

Ya Kris even if we get them up here from the US your looking at approx 72.26 per tire plus shipping and duty ,you are looking at 860.00 us for 6 tires or 1140 (before hst) cad.
I found CARLISLE CHEVRON tires up here for 150.00 a piece.

I recently bought 6 AT-101 tires from the USA. For me to buy 6 21" tires from an Argo dealer would run me $1200 Canadian. The AT-101s would cost me $1175 after tax + some tire stewardship fee of $10 each. I ended up ordering all 6 tires from Powersports Place in the US, The tires came to $378 USD, with shipping, exchange and duty my total cost was $765 Canadian to my door.

Back to the OPs original question, there is absolutly no reason at all for the new tires not to fit on the old rims baring any physical damage to the rims. Go ahead, order the tires, if they are the same nominal size they have to fit the rim regardless of any differnece between nominal size and actual size.

That is not true at all. Everyone I know and myself included declare anything and everything required, the risk of getting caught isn't worth the potential "savings" by not paying the duty.

It's not worth having something shipped to Canada unless the items are shipped VIA USPS because both Fedex and UPS charge outrageous brokerage fee to handle the import, often their brokerage fees exceed the value of the merchandise itself. If a US company will only use Fedex or UPS, I either have my items shipped to the UPS store in Buffalo for me to pickup and bring over myself and only pay the duty at the border or I shop somewhere else.

Here's a screen shot of my online reciept. $534 USD works out to $708 Canadian today, still almost 1/2 price over buying these here.
