  • Slipping tires in plastic tracks

This past fall I bought a '96 Argo Vanguard to use for ice fishing. It has the Argo super tracks on it. I've had it in the slush/overflow and the tracks really ice up but my real problem is when I get ice on the inside of the tracks the tires slip. It has 22x10x8 worn out (maybe an eight of an inch of tread left) and weather cracked runamuck tires on it now. When I bought the machine I thought the tires wouldn't be a problem with the tracks. Will putting new tires on the machine help much, and if so, what would be the best tire? I only plan on using this in the winter with the tracks. I was thinking maybe turf tires, but now I think they would just fill up with slush and slip. I'm wondering, maybe something with a flat open profile verses a rounded tread area? I would greatly appreciate any ones opinion or experiences.
    Thank you. Irving

All i can say is having used the Argo supertrack for years icing due to wet snow/slush will be a issue for pretty much any tread style we never used anything but the OEM Argo tires and had great luck with the track system, that said two things come to mind we would as much as possible set it in a heated area to thaw down and keep tire pressures to factory spec,s very little else will help you if the ice builds up on the traction surface and if it continues to build up it will place a great deal of strain and pressure on the axles as well as the track system.NCT

He did, stick with the runamucks, keep your tire inflated properly and do not let ice build up inside your tracks. If you need a better solution there are better track designs on the market that do not have the limitations/short comings of the factory plastic tracks.

P.S. the bright side of some tire slippage is you will probably never break an axle or chain

No truer statement ever made Canadian Zuk I never had a axle chain or tensioner issue with the plastic tracks ice buildup or not even with the older Magnums and Conquests and in ideal conditions you could hear a tire here and there "skip" the internal profiles of the track and relieve the windup, that's why I said had great luck with that track system, yes way less than ideal that's why I jumped at the rubber tracks when they were introduced and although there capability's in the condition I run(Snow) are impressive that's where the love affair ends, they are a drive-line killer in certain conditions when the track surface becomes wet as well as the tire the adhesion between the two can make you wince as you feel the power needed to overcome the friction/windup,when the snow is dry and the air temp well below freezing and plenty of snow entering the track and not melting its tolerable/snapped axles/broken flanges/chains singing make these tracks less than desirable Argo should be pursuing a replacement or at the least another available option for their track system.Chilly Cheers NCT
