  • tracks , front chains ,back chains

just curious..some guys running tracks remove the front chains . prevents chain windup and maybe adds a little more power . on a 6x6 with tracks is there any advantages to removing back chains instead of front chains in terms of turning , pulling power , etc. my max 2 does well with front chains off when running tracks..just wondered if any removing back instead ? thanks , johnboy va.

To me it makes more sense with the fronts off. That way the slack is on top. Most crawlers are driven from the rear also. The only problem I’m having with no fronts is tires spinning on the rims a little. Have you noticed this on your II ?
What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

On a max the fronts are so much easier to remove. If you pull the rears and climb a very steep hill the front tires tend to spin in the tracks. The rear tires set in the tracks tighter in a climb. Had several Argo people pull rear chains to save on tensioners from wind up. Front tires would spin in tracks if wet or covered with snow. Not a problem downhill. Max is absolutely faster and easier to shift with front chains out.

thanks guys... i will stay with removing fronts . tbone , i have had no problems with tires spinning on the rims , but sometimes in the deep , soupy mud the tires ( all 3 ) spin in the tracks. i don't run my tracks real tight . last muddy time at busco the max did great with the front chains off, so i'll stick with that . johnboy va.

Johnboy what are you running for air pressure? And what tires do you have?

t bone ...i have 25x11-10 sedona mud rebal tires . i run around 5 lbs . pressure . the tread pattern is pretty good for mud and snow. not as good for grip on the tracks as the argo tires...but they still work fine for me . i'm sure i could tighten them up with some more air. i try to find a good balance between track tightness and smooth ride when not in snow or deep mud . johnboy

I hear ya. Trying to find the balance between a good ride and track tension. Did some testing and the side with 3 pounds spun on the rim a little the side with 5 didn’t. I guess there’s really no such thing as s good ride on these things anyway lol.

9, I run 15-10-10-15. My best ride is when I’m sitting watching people get pulled out of the mud. Not that it happens a lot. LOL
