  • Tire Shopping for Argo Response

    Hi all!
I am starting to tire shop for the Argo 8x8. I figure I will buy them in sets of 4 as money becomes available. I currently run some worn out 22x10-8 Runamuks but want to replace them with something a little more agressive. I have been reading as much of the tire section as I can and believe I have decided on the Swamp Fox 22x11-8.

All of the posts regarding Swamp Fox tires seem to be for the taller version of Swamp Fox Plus. I think 22" is as tall as will fit the Response without bumping into the neighboring tire. The SF tread depth is 5/8" versus the SFplus 1.2" depth.

Do any of you see that this tire would be a bad choice for the Response? The SF is a 6ply tire so I guess it will ride rough. But I'm hoping that it will be a good all-around tire (swim/dirt/grass/mud/snow). I don't like running the tracks since we don't have a lot of deep snow but we do have some ice that the tracks spin on.

    Thanks for your input.

Not meaning to start waffling already, but...
The main reason I am not going for the popular Super Swamper TSL is the additional cost. It looks like the TSL is $5 cheaper per tire, but will cost an additional $50-60 per tire for shipping and the rims I would have to buy to mount them on (The 22" tire only comes for 9 or 10 inch rims.).

The TSL tread depth is better and they have gotten great reviews here. But are they worth almost doubling the cost over the Swamp Fox?

There's a 22x12.5x8 tsl. A guy had them in the past on argo and max. Did not swim. Great otherwise.

Thanks for posting Roger. Your post made me realize that I had mixed up the Super Swamper for the Vampire. I think I will make things simple and stick with the Swamp Fox. Besides, my "banker" is saying the extra money for rims is out of the question.

Have you ever used one of those "mini tire changers" that you bolt to the garage floor? Seems like with 8+ tires to change, it might be worth it to purchase one instead of having the local shop change out the tires.

Some us use the harbor freight one. Not the smallest but the bigger one. I have the smallest and it works but is flimsy. I don't change a lot of tires but have broken a lot of outer beads down to clean.

Well, I received 4 Swamp Fox tires today and am pretty excited to get them mounted. They shipped folded in half! Anybody have experience getting these popped open?

Here are a couple notes for anyone new to changing tires like me.
              1. The "folded in half" Swamp Fox tires were fairly easy to "pop" open using a 18 inch tire spoon and the tire tool that came with the floor mounted Northern Tool tire changer. (along with a little elbow grease. )
              2. The floor mounted tire changer made quick work of breaking the beads and dismounting the tires.
              3. After cleaning the rust and flaking paint from the rims, I'll find out how well the tool mounts the new tires to the rims.

Any pictures of your tires on the Response?

I'll post some images once I get the rims cleaned up and the tires mounted. I only bought 4 tires to start, so I'll have to decide which positions to put them in.
