  • Cut sidewall in Cleveland

Help, have a rawhide III with plenty of thread and a significant cut in the sidewall from a nice trailside tree stump on my property. All the local tire shops say no go on a repair,I must beg to differ. Jerseybigfoot,if you happen to read this,evil8x8 tells me that you are the tire guru and is confident that you may be able to recomend a method of repair to me.anyone else's suggestions would greatly appriciated also. The cut is almost entirly confined to the sidewall area,it begins about 2" above the bead and extends outward to just below the begining of the thead. Also does not appear to be complete cut thru. Cut on outside is aprox. 2" long but on the inside appears to be only about 1"- 1 1/4".Thanks, Joe.

I'd put a patch on inside of tire and run with a tube.Should be ok until the next problem happens.Rick

Hey Rick, thats kinda what I was thinking too. I guess the million dollar question here is "what to glue the patch in with", obviously need something thats going to stick like H*** to the inside wall of the tire. "Gorilla Glue"? Joe.

One of my friends put a couple coats of super glue over the patch when he ripped a hole in the sidewall on the tire on his 4 wheeler. It worked very well and held air just fine.

Jersey, I had told Joe about the stuff you used to repair the balloon tire on Joe M's Scrambler at Busco. What is that stuff called?

I use reinforced radial patches on the inside and backup the outside cut with a regular tire patch. First I use a small sanding disk to flatten and buff the surface about 1/2" larger all around than the patch. On the trail I stuff a many plugs in the slice as it will hold. I'll post some photos later. Evil8x8 is referring to some high tech plastic I use for balloon tire repairs specifically for the hub repairs.

I googled something like "vulcanized tire repair" and discovered a bunch of tire stuff. Chemical vulcanization, two part patch material, all kinds of stuff I didn't know about. Lots of professional adhesives, etc.

Yes these guys were grinding down the inner moulding flush.

That patch that you did on my balloon tire is still holding... It's just that the other side let loose from the hub. Do you know if they sell that repair kit at Canoe, Kyak Shops?

This is the plastic I used to make the inner support rings for the tire to the hub.

I haven't tried repairing any bodies yet, but it will stick well to poly Kayak's
It appears that there is quite a bit of adhesives and repair kits for Kayaks.
