  • GBC "Spartacus"/"Spartan" tires

These are sharp-looking tires. Good V'ed treadshape that's sorta close to our AATV-preferred chevron design. (Though like so many other sorta-chevrons, I doubt they swim all that well. ) The bottom half of the 7/8" tall main lugs are solid, for the paddling aspect our machines need, while the ends are grooved enough to grab in loose dirt and mud. The larger footprint they have would likely deliver better traction and a smoother, more comfortable ride on hard-packed terrain than the more open-lugged design of the ASX. For those of you who run them, there's no need to flame me for casting aspersions on your beloved Vampire ASX. It's all a trade-off, I realize. It depends on what & how you drive and what terrain you're riding in.

The Spartan/Spartacus appears somewhat similar in design to the Carlisle MudWolf tires whose style I love. The main lugs wrap around onto the sidewalls somewhat for better digging, but the areas in-between the main lugs are a bit more open than those on the MudWolfs, allowing for easier slide-steering, right Robbie? (rdr cautioned me that too much sidewall bite could equal a "grip & flip" on an AATV.)

Another nice thing about these tires is that they're radials, so I'd expect they'd have good flex and be a fairly smooth-riding tire. And these buggers also have an 8-ply rating!!! Talk about your puncture resistance! Wonder how much squish & flex they'd have on K-locks running at 1 to 2psi?? GBC has a solid rep, so they might be worth a spin.

Here's a brief YouTube tour I found of the Spartacus.

Ye gods! Yet another tire option for me to agonize over!!!

I think if you ground off the small rectanguler shaped lug thats between the longer lugs, this tire might swim like a rawhide III.

i did that with a set of duro "mud and sand" tires. cut out the 3 knobs betweern the main lugs and they swim pretty well. the downside is it was about 30 min per tire to do. these tires wouldn't have been my choice, but they came on a machine so i had to put them to use. pics of the mods are attached

Looks interesting. Might be a good trail machine tire for me since my backyard trails have tons of "candlesticks" in the Pit area, I've been waiting to get a puncture. If they come in a 22" for an 8 or 9" rim, I'll give em a try this summer.
