  • 3 flats in 5 minutes? Why?

    Hello,

I have a 05 avenger. I put Super swamper vampires on it (25x13x9's) last winter. I really like them as the Rawhides constantly had sidewall punctures. However, I haven't used the vampires too much yet so I decided to fool around with the pressure to see if the ride quality would be better. So I lowered the pressure to 2 psi from my normal 3-3.5 psi and took her out. I ran over some rocky areas (not fast, just slowly) and end up with 3, yes 3 tire puncture in a 5 minute test ride. I had not had a flat before so is this becasue the lower pressure?

I now have 10 rawhide III tires and 8 vampires tires and somehow I would sure like to find something that can withstand the rocks around here!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

durn derek neaver heard of that . might be some bad tires . looks like the lower pressure would not do that. as they should conform to what ever they hit maybe some of the vampire guys can answer that . pm dan might max IV he has run the's tires he might have a answer robbie

Are the sidewall punctures slices/cuts or punctures. Sidewall cuts are usually caused by the tire folding on the sharp sedge of the rim. this happens more with lower tire pressure. The less expensive rims do not have the outer edge rolled in. The K-rims are better, I think Matts rims are also rolled. The wider the tire also the bigger the problem at low pressure.

Nope they aren't sidewall cuts. I definately know what they are after using the stock rims and Rawhides!!

These were pure puncture wounds. I took the tires into our local repair shop and he thought it was just a fluke and that the low pressure may have added to the problem. We live on the Canadian Shield and the granite is sharp and jagged. Low pressure can allow a sharp point to twist in sometimes he said.

I'll get them patched and pump them back up to 4psi. I really liked the ride at 2psi but I'd rather not have flats!

            tire puncture

In the past I've had a tire fold up on to the side of the rim and the edge of the rim was the thing that actually punctured the tire.
kinda odd to watch it happen???
