  • Steel vs Al wheels for the Jiger project

I’m in the process of rebuilding my Jiger 152 and I having a hard time deciding on what wheels to get. I’m looking for something between an 8x7 and an 8x8 to mount my 22” Runamuks on and I can’t decide between steel or aluminum.

I have found a good deal on some 8x7 4 bolt steel wheels but they weight about 10 lbs each. I have also found some 8x7 4 bolt Al wheels on ebay, I don’t have a weight on them but I’m guessing they are only around 5 lbs.

The Runamuk tires are already 6 lbs heavier than the stock Jiger balloon tires. So the steel wheels will make each tire/wheel combo 16 lbs heavier than stock for a total of 96 extra lbs in just tire and wheel weight.

The Jiger is only going to see light recreational use mostly in the snow or muddy pasture. I don’t plan to recreate the Jiger proving ground video from Wayne’s site.

So the question is, should I go with the Al wheels for the weight savings, or should I go steel for the durability?

    Thanks,
    -Dean
I'm relatively new the amphibious world but I'm already developing an addiction...

I would go with aluminum (if not too expensive) The less rotating mass you have the faster you accelerate and it is easier on your motor. If it is just for light use they should hold up fine
8x8 twice as good as 4x4
