  • 1970 action age scrambler homemade tracks

just picked up this scrambler yesterday. just need to put and engine in it and go through it and see if it goes. was wondering how to make hamemade tracks. heard of taking snowmobile long tracks and ising those but i cant find any used ones. any help would be nice. hoping to get some pics up and soon as the snow is off it.

    thanks

Hi Spencer, welcome to the site. I would say the two most common things to make them out of are snowmobile tracks or conveyor belt. If you will use the search here on the site, there are a few threads and pictures showing what members have done in the past.

Yeh, I've seen those but don't know where to get the conveyer belt. I like both kinds but the snowmobile track ones seem the would work like on a snowmobile and work good I snow because that's what I would be using them for. The distance around my tires is 188" per side so I would need 4-121" tracks total unless I can get long tracks but still buying used tracks is expensive, like $100 per track! Plus what ever it costs for the rest of the stuff.

Just a thought. I believe the scrambler uses smaller chain than most 6-wheelers, and not sure how much stress the drive system can handle. Tracks WILL stress everything more. You might want to check with members with Scrambler experience, like JerseyBigFoot, LarryW, JoeM etc... Just a thought before plunking down cash on making something to break the machine.

just an fyi that many quarries give away their used conveyer belt. Hundreds of yards of it. It costs them money to dispose of it. They can not use it anymore when the edges get frayed....but it is usually 36" or 48" wide and only the outside inch or so goes bad. The stuff I get is 5/8 inch thick and steel belted. And it is HEAVY. I buy 50' lenghts and bore 6" holes every 2 feet and use it to line my garden. Plants seeds in the holes and watch them grow. Best of all, no weeding! Plus the black rubber keeps the soil warm and my garden produces like crazy! Plus, no muddy shoes and cuts down on mosquitos. A lot of labor up front, but it pays off the very first uear. In the fall, just roll it to the end of the garden and rototill. In the spring, just give it a good kick and it rolls out on its own. Seems too heavy for 6x6 tracks, but maybe they have thinner belts too

just put some pics in the gallery. there is a leverby the steering shaft and mave but isent connecterd to any thing and there are also some switches to. it there suppose to be a second petal because there is what looks like a brake cable, not hooked up? can i get any parts for richards relics? like the skid pan, seals, bearings?

All the chain is 41. Bearings are available but do not use the bearing numbers off the existing outboard axle bearings as the supplier will give you 30mm instead of 1 3/16" ID bearings. Skid plates are not available. You are better off reinforcing the outside front and bottom of the chain area with steel or heavy HDPE. You are missing the foot brake and possibly the foot brake cylinder assy. The lever is for the engine choke. Parts are around and best to ask through this forum. Richard may have some parts. The clutch / steering works well if in good condition but I'd limit the HP to 15hp 4 stroke. Reverse is a problem if you want to be extreme with the machine. My Daughter has a Marc 12 scrambler with 12hp and keeps up easily on family trail rides. She just plans where she goes. Operate it like a snowmobile or quad without reverse and the times you need it are minimal. The machines are light, ride well and swim with the correct tires. Yours looks like an early 7HP 69-70.

i've heard that tractor supply has chains and clutches that will fit on it. still not sure about the wires, switches and cables just hanging there?

Check to see if the aluminum brake cylinder is still under the dash. There should be a nylon tube attached to it leading back to trans and the two small brake actuators.
I may have a salvage unit around.

the hose is there but the cylinder is not. could i make one if i can not find one. by trans do you mean the clutch and brake assembley because mine does not excatly have a tranny. if you have a unit that i could get that would be great.

wow, nice machine that help alot to see a restored one!!!!!! is the engine like a single cylinder snowmobile engine? the engine that came with mine was a single cylinder ski do rotax engine. it has the same clutch but no exhaust, its hard to pull and it needs a carb rebuild.plus i want electric start. do you think that i could use any engine like one form northerntool or tractor supply and put the clutch on that?? this is the one that i was thinking about-http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_393_393

how did you get the spidles off i cant quite seem howto get mine off?
