  • need help with rim\tire combo

New to this site. I am undergoing a frame up resto on a 1970 argo(I think). 6 wheel, 400cc oil burner. I have been reading all the forums on tires/rims and there are so many opinions and choices. My machine came with 4 BFG fatcats on 3 bolt centres. (One still holds air if anybody is looking for one Free, you just pay shipping) and 2 runamuks on 5 bolt rims. I've done some asking and I should be able to fit 22" tires underneath but now I'm reading about popping beads and crappy tires. I phoned Richard's Relics and he quoted me $580 for 6 (Carlisle I think) but are these tires any good? I have 7\8 axles and don't want to bend them, so I'm guessing softer tires are better. Any advice would be a real big help. Also, does anyone have any tips about the 3 to 5 hub conversions. I figure I will have to outsource to a machine shop but what kind of steel should I use. Or does anyone have any for sale? Thanks and I will hopefully have some pics up soon.

Hello, welcome to the site. I too have a 1970 argo 6x6 400 oil burner. I just wanted to ask you if you asked richard's relics if he had any 3 to 5 lug convertion plates/hubs..

Don't forget we have the 3 to 5 lug adapter template right here on the Site for the DoItYourSelfer....

If you're in a pinch and can't afford to have a "machine shop" cut out the circles for you, you can make the adapter out of a piece of square. Not as pretty I suppose, but the end result is the same.

I believe Richard's Relics has them but since I need to make new hubs, there is no point in making a 3 hole then get an adapter plate. He said he doesn't carry the 7\8 hubs anymore due to lack of demand. Any thoughts on rim and tire combo. I will be doing most wheeling in dirt, grass or water. Not much rock. I'd like them to swim pretty good.
