  • Anti-seize on Track Collars?

    Had major trouble with my tracks last season. As soon as I made a repair it wasn't 20 minutes before the track came apart again. I'm inspecting them now and as I turn the tracks over two or three pins fall out, not the whole pin, just half of it. Turns out almost all pins are broken. What are the chances of that? So I've bought some 1/4" rod stock and I'm fighting to get the set screws and collars removed from the old pins. As I put the pieces back together I'm using anti-seize in the collar and on the set screws. Bad idea? I want to be able to pull any pin without a hassle. Somewhere I recall reading that thread locker should be used. I don't even use that stuff on fan/blower wheels. The rod I'm using isn't anything special but I'm hoping it will at least last a few seasons. That Argo stuff is big $$$$$!!!

    I made my own pins out of the 1/4'' stock. Just bent one end and cut tread on the other.
    Works really well as the nut on the end comes off easy. Only use this pin on 18'' tracks as the bent end would touch the tub on narrow tracks. Cost me about $18 plus my time.
    If I'm going in some where with only a couple bad spots, I use tracks then run tires further in. Takes about 2 min to pull pins and drop tracks.

      That sounds like an interesting idea. Can you post a picture of your pins in the tracks?

          Here is a pic of the pin. I used a 1/4'' locknut on one the end. Use a plier to pull the pin on the other end. Makes it very easy to install or remove tracks.
          Plus it's CHEAP..

            Is that the pic, those two gold pins? Can we see one of the track itself. Those don't look very long. Can't picture how they would be installed.

              There are 2 pic in the gallery listed as PINS.
              The top pic is the pin installed, and the sec pic is the pin laying on the hood.
              They are about 14'' long, and just push them in same as the original. You could buy them from me, I made them
              myself and I only charge $15 per pin. Just kidding. You gotta makem yourself.

                I make 'em similar to yours, but thread and double nut both ends.

                  Axial stress should be low enough, and hair pins are usually very hard spring steel. I also think if you took some .032" stainless steel safety wire, and safetied a thrust washer to the track lanyard style, you could unpin your track anywhere anytime very easily, and you would not loose your washer in the mud. This may be a bit of overkill. I would mount the hairpins in "direction of flight" like airplane parts, so that they would not be inclined to get pushed out as they come around.
                  The time required to drill every pin would be a bit less than that required to thread each one, and you would have a lot of flexibility when it comes to mounting tracks and changing tires.
                  Makes me wonder, too, everybody has those special vise grips for pulling chain together. What about a small over-center tool and a drift. If it fit between track sections like a blade, and then you tightened it up (or a nylon ratchet strap with special ends sewn in) couldn't you pull enough slack out of your track to get one of these pins in without pulling tires or valve stems, and all that other rodeo?
