  • Tire question

It looks like the rear tires get more wear than the front tires, should I rotate the fronts with the rear.

What is the best air pressure for the run-a-muck tires?

Has anyone tried running sand paddle tires when their fctory tires wear out? It would seem like sand tires would work great in the mud and water? What about just running sand tires on the back?

If you will search the forum, paddle tires have been discussed a little in the past. For the tire wear, what kind of ATV do you have? What kind of tire pressure are you currently running?

I bet if you run a set of 20" paddles on just the rear with your 22" runamucks, you'd get better water speed, and there'd be less wear on your paddles.

            Hi Crowhater,

Your Conquest is new enough that it has the one sided, self adjusting, chain tensioners. The best thing you could do for that machine would be to start by unbolting all the tires and wheels and sizing them. To do that, simply make sure that they are aired up to a common PSI. Then measure the actual outside circumference of each of them and write that on the inside of the rim with a paint pen. Then reinstall the tires so that the smallest one is on the front, the largest one is under your feet, the next largest is behind that, and the next smallest is on the very back. This will save a lot of wear and tear on your chain tensioners when running on hard surfaces.

As for sand paddle tires, such as the Gecko tire, they look cool and it is easy to think that they would work, but they don't. I have tried a pair of them in every location and in both forward and reverse directions, and in every test they will swim slower than a set of worn out Runamuk's. It stands to reason that if they did work, we would see a few of the manufacturers designing tires like that and they would be standard equipment on new machines.

The best replacement tire for your 22" Runamuks is built by Carlisle exclusively for Argo. You can probably get them from your local Argo dealer.

Best of luck and hope this helps!

I hate reviving a thread that's been dead for a year and a half....
I just had to replace two tires that were dry rotted and not very trustworthy in my opinion. so the new 26in tires are 1/4 to 3/8 taller than the other four. i will be buying more matching tires to go with the two i just replaced. But in the mean time What would be the best place to put my odd oversized tires on my max iv? In reading this I'd guess middle axles but want to confirm.

I would put them on the middle axles as well. I typically run a little higher pressure in my middle two tires on my Max IV and have had good results doing so. Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just a personal preference of mine.

You could also adjust the pressure in all of the tires so that the circumference is the same on all of the tires.

Thanks Mike your 3rd guy to say middle. The other tires are all tubed and I'm leary of going up with pressure on them as I have no idea of the tube quality. I had to wire brush the wheels and sand them smooth to mount the replacements on and hold air. I have a feeling the other rims are as bad and may have issues with rusty crap potentially popping tubes under greater pressures.
