  • Trying to stay out of a rut

Ok guys need any input u can give me. First off I hunt in the ms delta around eagle lake pure gumbo and water that why I have a max 2. Now for the problem. All of my family have bought quads and are running 28" tires so u can imagine what I'm dealing with with my 21" rawhides. So I have decided a set of duel wheels is the answer I believe that should keep me out of there ruts. My question to our members is where is the cheapest place to buy a set of duels and do I need to buy 22" tires and move my 21"s to the outside. I need everything spools tires and rims.

It is going to take a lot of power to turn a set of dual tires on a MaxII- I would consider other options.

zig zag the ruts. you have the capability to turn on a dime. start to the extreme left, aimed for extreme right... when you run out of room make a hard left and repeat. Learning to ride the tops of the ruts takes a bit of practice... especially when they are covered with water, but it can be done quite effectively. At Busco Beach where we have 2 big rides a year, the big HP lifted quads are King (till we come to town) the place is frequently nothing but ruts. when it's play time I will dive in and see what I can do with the rutted trails, but if I need to get somewhere fast, the zig zag method will usually get it done

"Caution! Stupid question alert!!!" What are duels? Is that a duelly setup for aatv's? If it is then I could see turning being a big prob. I'm in agreance with racerone3 in that you have 6 wheel drive, cut your own path or straddle the ruts. A good grippey mud tire should help you quite a bit.
Road? What road? I blaze my own trail!!!

Ok I know all about the zig zagging been running these machines since 1979 when we bought our first hustler the problem is when u zig zag 2 miles across the 2 sections we hunt and then have to come back twice a day it get kind of old would be nice if u could get around that and that's why I was hoping the duels would keep me from high centering without having to zig zag the whole way.

Yeah bazoo I checked out the j wheels but they told me the smallest ones u could buy was made to fit 23" tires and I have the 21" raw hides I don't even know if the max 2 would hold a 23" tire

I don't think 23s would be an issue. I believe 25s have been made to fit. I would recommend a little bigger tire. Do a few searches for max II tire sizes on here and I bet you can find one where at least 24s were used.

You should stick with your plan for duals, I know from experience that you need all the flotation you can get to run in gumbo... I would suggest that you get a set of at least 23" tires, and run them on the inside. You can have a machine shop make you the axle extensions, then you can bolt your 21" tires on the outside. This will give you the maximum flotation with the least turning resistance for the least money.

If you go with those J-wheel things, you'll have to buy both them and a set of tires to run them. They look cheap to me anyway; first time you clip a tree, they'll be gone.

I will throw my two cents in here,I have ran doubles for years for much of that same problem, four by,s with big tires cutting up the trail so bad they have to take to the bush,it flat out works no more hang ups period, draw backs, harder on the machine and not cheap to do,and I know nothing about the strengths and or weaknesses of the Max II it takes a heavy duty axle and bearing set up to take the gaff.N.C.T

Thanks for the info I came up with a set of rims if the hustler bolt pattern is the same so I won't be out but just a set of tires and whatever the machine shop charges so I think its worth a try

You could run the J wheelz if you were willing to by a set of 24" Argo swimmer tires, but then you would run into clearance issues with the tires. I am sure the J-wheels would work well for the conditions you discribe but that would be a lot of money for what you want to do. I have seen three MaxIIs with 25" tires but there are really a lot of clearance issues you have to work on.

Noel Woods runs a set of 25" MudBugs on his MaxII and the machine is unstoppable and swims a guesstimated 2 mph. Lots of videos of his machine in bad mud at River Run posted by mudbug and Noel Woods

Quote from the website. "J-Wheelz are designed to fit any 23-26 inch tire and can be used on ATV’s, UTV’s, and 6-Wheel Vehicles with any rim diameter"
                          Looks like they work

I bet it would help with stability but I still wonder how tough they are if you hit a tree or if the jwheel is supporting the weight of the machine in a rut. I wonder if they make any improvement in swimming ability.
