Can you weld the hub onto a 1" 4140 Axle instead of using the sleave and bolt?

I was planning on welding polaris hubs on my attex. That way i have a choice of 10" or 12" rims.As long as you can slide your axles out for future bearing changes i don't see a problem with it.Argo hubs are welded on.

Hi,being that it's 4140 I would maybe preheat , weld then wrap. That material has a lot of carbon in it and if it's heated and cools too quickly it can harden and become brittle. I'd warm it enough so it would be uncomfortable to touch by hand and then weld and maybe wrap with insulation to slow cooling. Good luck. Bill

Max and Argo both have the hub welded directly to the axle, but both run the 1 1/4" axles. Most of the machines running the sleeve design are running 1" or smaller. The difference in frequency of bent axles is HUGE from one size to the next. I always ran the sleeve design on my small axle machines just for the simplicity of building spares... 18 inches of 4140 with 2 holes. Now that I've upgraded those machines to 1 1/4 axles they all have the welded hubs

What machine are you planning on doing this with?

The Super Chief and here is another question could you make a sleave that would weld to your bearing collar this way you would take all the weak spots out of a 1" axle making it a laminated 1 1/4" outside the tub since the collar spins with the inner bearing it should not be a problem and you could still remove it with your sleave and hub
