  • Where can I get 4140 for axles

Hey guys, I was wandering if any of you would tell me where is the best places to get
1 3/16th round 4140 stock for axles. I found a few places but they are kind of expensive. Any suggestions?

Yup, I ran into that while owning Hustlers. Seems 1 3/16" is not a standard size at your average supply shop. I considered going that route and just turning down the area needed. I think just up-sizing to 1 1/4" bearings would be better, you would then have that extra 1/16" on the diameter at the bolt hole where you need it most. I think the older Max machines used them and had the 3 hole flanges.

I bought a 12 foot peice of 4140, 1 1/4" at a place called Sol's Pipe and steel in Monroe La. two weeks ago for 82 bucks and change. Thought about boring my old sprocket tube assemblies to 1 1/4" but decided to get new ones built. The 26 tooth, hubbed unfinished, 3/4 " bore sprockets are only 7.50 each at surplus center.

Since you had the new tubes built, did you have them made with thicker walls, so they would be less likely to wallow the holes out? Also which way did you go with the 1 1/4 stock, did you get bearings to fit it, or have the stock turned down to 1 3/16?

I went with 1 1/4" i.d. seamless tubing, it appears to have about the same wall thickness as the stock ones. Had one end of the 4140 turned down to 1" to use the stock inner bearings & got 1 1/4" outter bearings.
