DIY tracks?

Stumbled on this walk through on DIY robot tracks:

If we used heavier gauged components with the same concept, what would the result be on our AATV's? I guess they wouldn't swim, would they even stay on? Probably a million reasons it wouldn't work and I'm hoping you guys will take the thinking out of this for me.
