  • T-20 carnage

I picked up a transmission with some other parts a week or so back, and decided to tear into what I thought was the worse of the two. One of the ends of the bands got tweaked from what I can only assume was a high rpm launch from a dead stop. The end of the band twisted on the band anchor pin (pin didn't nudge) and it wore all of the friction material off, causing the steel band to chew into the drum.

How much time do you think was spent on this machine in this situation to incur this much damage to the drum (rhetorical)? The band material is hard, but not THAT hard....

Another treat, was the discovery of the most bizarre shifter modifcation I've ever seen. I've seen bolts used as pins, but never little thingywhazzits welded to the bottom of (what I assume was) a broken pin. 'Not very hard material, thank goodness. The shift collars seem to be fine.

Aside from needing a reline, a new drum and "back to spec" move on the shifters, the tranny isn't that bad. I expected it to be filled with a quart of lobster bisque, but there was actually fresh(ish) ATF in it.

I never saw a drum worn down THAT bad. It sort of looks like someone gave a townie a lathe and 12 pack of Genny and said, "go see what you can do". And what on earth possessed someone to make their shifter pins like that? I've never seen anything like that either. So what did you end up with as far as parts that were not usable? Just a drum and a band that was tweaked and twisted?

For sale: T20 transmission, works great, but a little touchy when turning right.

You see the T-bar shift pins from time to time on very old transmissions. I suspect they designed them to spread out the force on the rim of the spool, but when they wear, they woggle out the bore where they pivot and then lock up, ruin the bore or break the lip of the spool. They're really kinda cool, but I'd never put them back into a transmission I planned on using.

I don't know what machine the transmission is actually out of, but it's a non-supported mainshaft unit with the chunky case webbing compared to earlier transmissions I've pulled apart. Who knows, they could be transplants. Regardless, they're not cool enough for me to put back in, either.

Hmmm. Maybe it was a later idea and the ones I found were transplanted from later models. The only shifters of that type except one, (and that was only on one side so I assumed it was installed later) were in early early models. I've only seen 5 of them in all, so I assume they weren't used for long. By the time one of these units makes it to me, chances are that at least a few people have opened it up already.

Mike. These are the pins from my Wolf. I was under the impression they're from early machines but I'm not positive. Yours don't quite look like cast pieces like mine did either. Definitely the same concept either way though. And looks like with about the same results, though yours didn't break yet.

Of all T-20's that I've gone through, I've never seen the t-bar style ends on the shifters. Looks like you learn something new everyday.

Only driven by a little old lady to church on Sundays.....Yeah, I had one of those transmissions too. It's amazing that people keep driving no matter how bad the grinding noises get.
